“Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it is glad with all good men when truth prevails.” (I Corinthians 13: 5-6, JB Phillips New Testament)

These biblical lessons on love continue to be powerful and relevant. As we love, so are we empowered, happy, helpful. But we must love rightly. We must recognize what love is and what it isn’t, and then we can really thrive. This understanding of love also enables us to feel more like our true selves, the very expressions and objects of God’s Love.

We can claim the Truth of Love and let go of the belief in a love that is full of ego and need, thinking more of self and less of others. Love is of God, and God’s ideas are One, unified, harmonious. To love with conditions, or for one’s own gain alone, is not love at all. We may be affectionate or charitable, but without a true generosity of heart, we are not really loving. We aren’t drawing from the great Source of Love that wins the day and brings us satisfaction and blessings.

Love is respectful and thinks of another’s feelings. Love is compassionate toward others and not overly sensitive. Love gives another the benefit of the doubt. It is a trust in God that allows one to feel less defensive and fearful in love, and more ready to give without reservations and to stay strong and calm no matter what.

It is easy to look at others and to envy them, even as we say we care about them. But to truly express love, we must see that another’s good doesn’t take away from our own. We can celebrate another’s success genuinely and be ready to receive our own just-right blessings without comparing.

God is Love. And He is plentiful in this Love. As we utilize it rightly, we will feel its grace and the joy it brings to every day.
