“Seek (long for, require) good and not evil, that you may live; And so may the Lord God of hosts be with you, Just as you have said! Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the [court of the city] gate.” (Amos 5: 15-16, the Amplified Bible)
If we really want to live and feel whole, safe, and free, we must be making wise investments. A genuine feeling of well-being and abundance comes as we consciously take a stand against evil and injustice in the world and, most importantly, in our hearts.
We may not always know exactly what to do or behave perfectly, but if we continue to seek good, to really yearn to be better, to love more, to want to do what is right, then we feel supported by God and His grace. We have chosen to obey His nature, those good qualities that are in us and that we can express in the world.
God’s guidance and protection is with us as we seek to uphold His Principle, His Truth of Life as Love. An earnest longing for good—both to live it and to see it established for our world—is empowering, for it aligns with God’s own purpose.
And it is important, as this verse says, not only to love good, but also to hate evil. We can’t simply ignore the evil that would seem to appear in ourselves and in others. We must actively take a stand against it—not by stoking it with our fear or giving it life, but by loving good even more. We can dissolve that sense of evil, promote peace and safety and justice, by our active love and our trust in the power and presence of God, good.
