“The night is nearly over, and the daylight is near, so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13: 12, Holman Christian Standard Bible)

This verse gives us a wonderful sense of anticipation. It is full of hope, an expectation based on Truth, certainty.

We can recognize the light that is dawning in our hearts, the awareness of good, honesty, integrity, that beckons us to act in ways that contribute to the world, that lift others, and that honor our own best selves.

We are being encouraged to come out into the light of day and to leave behind behavior and thoughts that don’t dignify us or God and His purpose. The deeds of darkness referred to here can certainly be criminal behavior or things done with evil intent. But they can also be more subtle—acts of selfishness or deceit; those pursuits which are not only harmful to others, but not good for us either.

We can step out into the light and know we are safe. For our armor, our protection, is light itself. It is that radiance that reflects God’s own presence, His goodness, His Love, and the power and strength and confidence that come from these divine qualities. We can prepare for the sunrise and know that we belong in its glow. We always have so much to give, to receive, and to live in the bright promise of a new day.
