“You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.” (Matthew 5: 8, the Message Bible)
Our blessings may seem reliant on outward circumstances. We believe we will feel satisfied and happy when certain things line up in our lives.
But the true blessing, according to Jesus’ teachings, is in getting our hearts and minds right. This beatitude reminds us that it is in finding that peace within—clearing our conscience and purifying our intentions—that we see blessings in our outside world. We feel a rightness in our experience as we feel that rightness within.
And this inner purity and peace can be realized. We can yield to a cleansing, to God’s love reminding us of our true innocence, our genuine goodness, our trust and expectation. We can challenge those arguments against our worthiness to feel blessed. We can recognize that we truly are children, God’s children, and that we are eager to live in accord with this wonderful truth.
We don’t create reality with our thoughts. God is Creator. What we can do is to change our perspective. We can purify our minds and hearts and begin to see more clearly all the good that is present in our world, in others, in ourselves.
