“For the whole law comes down to this one instruction: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself,’ so why all this vicious gnawing on each other? If you are not careful, you will find you’ve eaten each other alive!” (Galatians 5: 14-15, the Voice Translation)
The instruction is simple. And it is the law, a reliable principle, one which leads to harmony and peace and productivity.
We must and can love our neighbors. This respect and compassion for one another is our most natural state of being. Love is written in our hearts and it is what we are made of. Love is God. It is our Life, and abiding in it, honoring it, obeying that Truth within us, causes us to flourish individually and harmonize collectively.
So, why are we viciously gnawing at one another? Let’s wake up to what this inspired verse is telling us. As we resort to the worst in us—the devilish, the competitive, the egotistical, the fearful, the judgmental—we end up destroying ourselves. Even if we beat our brother, who is left standing? Do we really want the battling, nasty, unloving individuals to be the ones who remain to represent us, to lead us forward, to restore peace? Can they even do that?
The law is Love, and by loving we are our best selves. This is not only nice, it is powerful. This law of Love corrects, guides, resolves, heals, blesses, and saves one and all.
