“I’m telling you this straight. The Son can’t independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. The Father loves the Son and includes him in everything he is doing.” (John 5: 19-20, the Message Bible)
Jesus clearly gave the credit and the power to God. All his healing and teaching came from the divine Source, not from human knowledge or some personal ability. Jesus was acutely and intimately aware of the one key thing: his own oneness with God and God’s absolute Love for him.
The Master shared this truth with us not to show off an exclusive relationship Jesus had with his Father. He was teaching us of our own heritage and our own opportunity to do good, to bring health and joy to our lives and to others. This instruction applies to us all. We can’t do anything without God, but we are never without Him. God loves His children and includes them in all that He is doing.
We are the very expression of God’s activity. Jesus’s knowledge of this fact, moment-by-moment, freed him from the constraints and fears that come of feeling alone, uncertain, personally responsible. Jesus knew that as he yielded consciously and gratefully to God’s Love and to His perfect design, he could do all things, be a willing witness to revelation and resurrection.
Jesus was telling us straight. We are loved. We are not alone. We are the sons and daughters of God—included, embraced, and ready to walk in the world conscious of this healing reality!
