“Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11: 29-30, Message Bible)
Wouldn’t we all love to learn the unforced rhythms of grace? How much more pleasant our lives would be if we were to follow the directions of this healing verse.
And we have here both the instructions and the benefits. As we walk with the Christ, using Jesus as our model and God’s Love as our motive as well, we feel a sense of both progress and peacefulness. Jesus showed us the way through his kindness, his humility, his intention for good. And he showed us how to trust.
For as Jesus relied on his Father for all things—frequently reminding his followers that he could do nothing of himself—so can we do the same. And we have extra help! Because we have this very Christ-Truth to lean on. We have Jesus’s example of the power of humble trust. And we have the Truth remaining ever with us, that abiding awareness that we are one with God and that He loves us without limits, and always.
Let’s keep company with this healing consciousness. Let’s take each step with God and realize how natural this rhythm of life is to us. It is productive and has an impact, and yet there is no weighty burden in it. It is not ill-fitting. It is just us being who we were made to be and living freely and lightly, gracefully and gratefully, in our daily walk with Love.
