“If I had the gift of prophecy and knew all about what is going to happen in the future, knew everything about everything, but didn’t love others, what good would it do? Even if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love.” (I Corinthians 13: 2, The Living Bible)
This teaching is clear. Without love, all the superpowers we might have are truly worthless. Even having a firm faith and one that allows us to witness great things in the world, isn’t sufficient. Love is the one necessary thing, and its lack makes all the difference in the world and to the world.
One gets the sense that the writer has personal experience. This doesn’t feel like preachiness. There is an urgency about it, a real and deep perception. Prophecy and miracles were not unknown to him, but even these might omit the rich purpose and power that only Love can bring.
For Love is God and God’s Love is both perfect and universal. It must reach all and be expressed unconditionally. It isn’t human, but divine. It isn’t limited or personal, but it is the very nature of infinite God made known.
As we consciously know and express Love in all that we are and do, we honor God and our own oneness with Him. Then all things are possible to us, just like they were to Jesus. And these possibilities are replete with a healing and saving purpose and potency that only true Love can bring.
