“My dear friends, you should be quick to listen and slow to speak or to get angry. If you are angry, you cannot do any of the good things that God wants done.” (James 1: 19-20, Contemporary English Version)
Yes, my dear friends! Let’s take this inspired advice. Let’s be listeners not only to the words of others, but to the Truth about them and about ourselves. Let’s pause before we leap to judgment and give God, good, Love, an opportunity to speak to us and to bring light to what may feel like a dark or challenging situation.
Anger can seem justified at times. It may seem we are being provoked or that we must rise up and be defensive. But resentment and disagreement doesn’t get a lot done. It perpetuates hate and division and those unhealthy sentiments that may rev us up, but won’t get us anywhere fast.
God has a better plan for us. He wants us to achieve His goodness and make a real impact on others in a positive and beneficial way. God is Love and He is One. Hate and division are never going to please Him, nor can they make use of His power to accomplish.
On the contrary, when peace and love reside within us; when we listen instead of lashing out, we can do great good for God, for others, and feel true contentment ourselves as well.
