“Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.” (Romans 14:13)
Our loving regard for another is essential to living our own good life. We can’t be active followers of the Christ-Truth and still find justification to hinder another’s advancement in the way God appoints for him. Each one is worthy in God’s eyes; each is worthy to know Life as it truly is—flourishing, good, full of love.
Let’s be careful not to put a stumbling-block in another’s way in our thought as well as literally setting up obstructions. Do we limit another’s capacity to succeed when we think of them? Do we see them as just waiting for the karma of their bad choices to come and get them? Do we, in fact, hope they get what they deserve or just expect very little of them?
That thought is unfair not only to this child of God; it is also unfair to the one thinking the thoughts. We deserve an expansive and loving thought, for in this thinking is our freedom and joy. Resentments of others, envy, a feeling of revenge or of self-justification, necessarily limits our own attitude and potential. We’ve decided for a life that has partiality and favoritism, rather than the life that is Love’s intention for us. A greater, righter Life is ours—one that belongs just to us, and each individual has his own customized good as well. Each has a right to know this goodness and to recognize and rejoice that there are no losers in Love.
