“Jesus’ life proved, divinely and scientifically, that God is Love, whereas priest and rabbi affirmed God to be a mighty potentate, who loves and hates.” (Science and Health, page 42)
Jesus knew God truly. This God with which he was always consciously at one, made it possible for him to heal spontaneously, to teach with a wisdom that has held up through the centuries and across cultural boundaries, and to ultimately prove that life was deathless and immortal. He was the Messiah, the messenger of that Christ-ideal, because he declared Truth, and that Truth was Love.
The religious leaders preceding Jesus had a different understanding of God. They certainly recognized God as One and as powerful. They worshipped with their obedient lives and according to their highest sense of religious practice. They saw God’s might and honored it. But the character of the Almighty was still more or less based on a human model, a king who was sometimes good and sometimes despotic, who alternately loved and hated, brought war and brought peace.
Jesus knew God to be Love alone and that Love to be All. He understood His Father-Mother not as an incomprehensible ruler, one Who could not be fully understood, one Who was variable and capable of hate. Jesus knew God was pure Love, and this is why he was able to prove all that he did, to heal, to overcome lack, to still storms, and to demonstrate death conquered. It was the understanding of divine Love’s presence that made this all possible, and this same God that makes all things possible today. We can always trust Love to be Love.
