“God makes all the decisions here. God is our king. God runs this place and he’ll keep us safe.” (Isaiah 33: 22, the Message Bible)

This puts things in perspective. It makes it wonderfully clear that we are not in charge of life. We have a mighty power governing our being and our experience. God is our king, the ruler over us all.

This doesn’t mean we are powerless or that we are being manipulated by some unknowable, out-of-touch entity. What it does means is that God, infinite good, the wisdom that is Love, is with us—guarding us, keeping us safe, while also causing us to grow, progress, discover more of the Life He would have us see and know.

God’s decisions are His law made manifest. They release us from worry and burden. His government is about true freedom. It protects our birthright as the children of God and defends us against any attacks on that heritage.

God runs this place—our space, our lives, our world—and He is trustworthy. He is all good, all the time, and He knows His ideas well. He knows what we need and who we are. And when we listen and trust, we know what is right and our choices are simply an agreement with His.

“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength.” (Isaiah 30: 15, New Living Translation)

We can go back home. We can rest in a space of trust and comfort.

God calls us to remember that we can find our strength in Him. Salvation is not in the world and its many temptations. Satisfying answers are not in others or in specific human achievements. We may find temporary solace in material spaces and with certain individuals, but a true and abiding peace comes from a reliance on God.

The powerful Love of God is healing. It restores us and rejuvenates us. We can be still and surrender our sense of responsibilities, escape from the push and pressure of the world. In those quiet moments, returning and resting in the arms of grace, we discover the energy and the wisdom we need and gain the confidence to move forward into each new day.

“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline…And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.” (Colossians 3: 12, 14, The Message Bible)

The first thing here is to realize that you are chosen! If you are aware of the right desire within you to experience a life of love, then you are indeed chosen by God. He put that love in your heart and has given you a mission to feel it within and to share it with the world.

This healing mission is one we should absolutely relish. And we can enjoy discovering those qualities within ourselves that support this life. Our spiritual wardrobe needs to include the varied aspects of love that are precious and saving. We can choose to be compassionate, rather than judging. We can feel and express kindness and humility, rather than feeling removed or superior. We can be quiet, show restraint and self-control, staying focused and thoughtful, open and responsive.

And mostly, we can wear that all-purpose garment that this verse speaks of. We can accept God’s Love for us and with us. We can accept that we are chosen to be the very active expressions of Love. This quality is natural to us, and it completely suits us. This all-purpose garment keeps us safe, makes us beautiful, strengthens us, and gives us confidence. Never be without it!

“Let every word you speak be drenched with grace and tempered with truth and clarity. For then you will be prepared to give a respectful answer to anyone who asks about your faith.” (Colossians 4: 6, the Passion Translation)

We can feel free to share what we believe in. We should be enthusiastic about the ideas that we trust and find healing. Our devotion to good is revealed in the way that we live our lives, contributing to the world in ways that are positive and helpful.

Let’s be sure then that our words are also in line with the ideals that we serve. Let’s be sure that we are neither too defensive nor too accusatory of others when we are asked about our spiritual beliefs. We can use this verse as a helpful guide.

Let grace drench your words. Allow that feeling of God’s Spirit, the gentle power of His own loving intention, be felt in what you say. This means we are speaking not from our heads, but from our hearts. We can be honest and clear, genuine and sincere.

As we do this, we are at the ready to offer thoughts that are clarifying and also respectful. We invite an exchange of ideas that can be healing to another and to ourselves as well. We can be ready and eager to learn, to listen, and to love.

“Take a close look at everything, test it, then cling to what is good.” (I Thessalonians 5: 21, The Voice Translation)

We have the natural ability to observe and discover. We can be awake to what is going on around us. We can recognize what is important for us to understand in order to enrich our lives and more actively serve our purpose.

When we avoid a deeper exploration of ideas, whether new to us or more familiar, we hinder our ability to grow and to thrive. Instead, we can choose to take a close look at everything, with our spiritual eyes wide open. We can think and reason about things, about the world and ourselves, with a sense of curiosity and discernment.

This doesn’t require intellectualism, and it doesn’t mean we are overthinking everything. What this verse recommends is that we be alert to what we are believing in and investing with power. We can “test” our beliefs by how they operate in the world. Are we seeing proof in our lives and those around us by following certain practices? Do we feel peace in what we are doing or spending time thinking about?

Those ideas that feel constructive, that make us feel alive and in harmony with others and with life, are the ones to cling to. This focus on good causes us to flourish. Letting go of what isn’t working for us makes abundant room for even more goodness to flow in and to multiply!

“So be made strong even in your weakness by lifting up your tired hands in prayer and worship. And strengthen your weak knees, for as you keep walking forward on God’s path all your stumbling ways will be divinely healed!” (Hebrews 12: 12-13, the Passion Translation)

Strength is not about human will and physical force. Our true power is discovered and felt when we turn humbly to God, the infinite Spirit. God’s presence is at hand to revive us when we feel weak and weary. All we have to do is honor this divine goodness and Life. As we release ourselves willingly to God’s Truth and Love, we are uplifted, empowered.

And we gain ability and energy as we continue to move forward, leaning on God, letting go of self and allowing His plan to unfold. Walking in God’s grace, we not only avoid stumbling, our errors and weaknesses are healed. We feel the full freedom that is not just fixing the outward or waiting for something better. It is the health that goes deeper, a peace that is more secure and satisfying.

Our challenging times, those days we feel less than our best, are precisely the days to turn to the Source. We can surrender to God’s pure and boundless energy, readily available for us, and feel uplifted, carried forward, and healed.

“I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn’t like the peace that this world can give. So don’t be worried or afraid.” (John 14: 27, Contemporary English Version)

Peace is surely something we all seek. Even if we desire adventure or activity, we want to feel a sense of peace about all that we do, a certainty and a settled feeling within.

Looking to others, to a place, to a particular circumstance to bring us this tranquility often falls short. We can gain moments of feeling centered and calm, but we can just as quickly lose them when life seems to throw us turmoil, overwhelm, fear for our well-being or that of others.

But the Christ, the light of Truth, offers a peace that is transcendent. It is a powerful awareness of our oneness with God, that spiritual reality of who we are and of our security in God’s hands.

We can all open ourselves up to receiving and feeling this peace. We can gain it by accepting its presence, and then by knowing that we deserve it. We can be humbly receptive to the divine goodness, the Love that knows us in every moment and is here at all times—even the noisy and troubling ones—reminding us that we are safe, understood, and truly beloved.

“Those who are motivated by the flesh only pursue what benefits themselves. But those who live by the impulses of the Holy Spirit are motivated to pursue spiritual realities. For the sense and reason of the flesh is death, but the mind-set controlled by the Spirit finds life and peace.” (Romans 8: 5-6, the Passion Translation)

We can pursue spiritual realities and discover the life and peace we seek. Motives based on self and material gain limit our possibilities. When we let our ego and physical sense lead us, we omit what can bring us the most rich and right blessings.

We leave out Spirit, the infinite and glorious reality of being. We focus on the small and personal, when we could yield instead to the divine impulses, those that embrace the universal good and also bring us the true rewards of satisfaction, well-being, and gratitude.

We may think “the flesh”—the material sense of things—can guide us to success, to all our desires met. But this “sense and reason” doesn’t bring us life. It shuts the door on immortality and its boundless qualities by looking to matter and its limits as the be all and end all. This thinking leads us to the finite, to a lack of fulfillment, to a path that must eventually end in death.

But we can truly take on a spiritual mindset. We can see beyond material aspirations and find that true energy, expectancy, and peace that God’s infinite reality promises for us and for all.

“True love for God means obeying his commands, and his commands don’t weigh us down as heavy burdens. You see, every child of God overcomes the world, for our faith is the victorious power that triumphs over the world.” (I John 5: 3-4, the Passion Translation)

True faith is powerful. That trust based on a love for God, good, gives us a victory over the world and its challenges, fears, and limitations. The world would have us believe that we are mortal and doomed, that evil can conquer goodness, that what the senses tell us is the whole story.

A cynical and faithless view of life is what really weighs us down. A reliance on God, on Spirit, on what speaks within our hearts and souls, is freeing, burdenless, and also reliable. We can obey God’s commands by releasing our grip on fear and doubt, believing these things are legitimate, even somehow based in law. We can let our faith in the spiritual qualities of Love, Life, Truth, goodness, lead us forward, upward.

We can overcome the box the world would have us believe is legitimate. Through our faith in the power and possibilities of God, we can begin to live as He intended—as children of Life and of Love, born to flourish. We can show our true love for God—for universal good and infinite Love—by trusting Him to guide us and to perfectly care for us as we triumphantly and gratefully march on.

“For I am convinced [and continue to be convinced—beyond any doubt] that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present and threatening, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the [unlimited] love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8: 38-39, Amplified Bible)

Paul was completely confident. This inspired man preached the gospel and healed many. He was both a persecutor, before his conversion, and one who suffered persecution as he pursued his ministry. Yet, all that he endured only led to his utter conviction, without any doubts, that nothing could separate us from God.

This verse lists a number of possible reasons we might feel we are alone or in danger. We may think that distance keeps Love from us, or that circumstance keeps Life from us. We may believe that those humanly in charge can take away our peace and rob us of our joy.

But Paul knew otherwise. He trusted the Christ—that awareness of our relationship with God, as His dear child—and so Paul felt assured, safe, and ready to share this good news with others. Our oneness with God means we are never without infinite resources, the spiritual goodness and grace that is God’s quality and activity. We are never without the fullness of God’s Love for us. This consciousness gives us peace, strength, and conviction today and every day.
