“Whenever our hearts make us feel guilty and remind us of our failures, we know that God is much greater and more merciful than our conscience, and he knows everything there is to know about us.”  (I John 3: 20, the Passion Translation)

Our conscience can be our guide and it can also cause us a lot of grief and despair. When we feel we have made a mistake in judgment or that we have failed in some endeavor or relationship or pursuit, it is easy to beat ourselves up. We may mentally return to these experiences and continue to ruminate about them and feel guilt.

Let’s recognize that a conscience that brings us ongoing agony is not going to be so helpful to us. It is certainly good to be awake to behaviors and thoughts that need correcting and to seek reformation, but to feel ongoing guilt or shame is not healing for us and for others, nor does it obey God’s law of Love.

God knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows our motives and our goodness. He knows the idea that He designed, a child of His Love, not one for which He is ashamed. God’s mercy tenderly sees who we are and the true possibilities for our lives. God isn’t toting up marks against us to punish us. We are doing this to ourselves.

Let’s yield to God’s thoughts about us, His Love toward us, and receive the refreshing, the restored innocence that He is always ready to bestow on us. When we do this, we step out of self-centered despair and into a life of living and giving.

“…there is no place where God’s light is not seen, since Truth, Life, and Love fill immensity and are ever-present.” (Science and Health, p. 504)

We can awake joyfully and gratefully to this reality. Wherever God is, there is light—inspiration, love, goodness, wisdom, peace, uplift, renewal. And God is everywhere, always. His light is there in what seem the far-off places or the distant future. This light can be seen, for it comes from and is constituted of perfect Love.

Truth and Life and Love are actively filling all space—the immensity of the universe and the intimate place in our hearts as well. We can perceive and feel this light, and we can know this same Truth is available to all, that all can be blessed by it and find healing, safety, assurance, comfort.

Even when experiences seem dark and frightening, if we truly look with our spiritual eyes and open our hearts, we can’t fail to see that hope is aflame and love is at work. The more we look, the more we can see this light and how it banishes the darkness, and peace and progress naturally unfold.

“Look at the myriad of stars and constellations above you. Who set them to burning, each in its place? Who knows those countless lights each by name? They obediently shine, each in its place, because God has the great strength and strong power to make it so.” (Isaiah 40: 26, the Voice Translation)

We can be grateful observers of God’s magnificent design. We can take in His beautiful heavens and the control He holds over all. We can stand in reverent awe of the universe and what it continues to reveal to us of the scope and majesty of God’s creation.

When we look up and see those countless lights glowing above us, let’s remember that the very hand that caused them to shine for us to behold, is the hand that made us as well. God created us to beam forth and twinkle and dance in the great expanse of His Life. We are like those stars, ordered and controlled and sustained by God, and bringing His light to the world in unique and amazing ways.

The stars obediently shine by God’s power, and so do we. We naturally and necessarily glow with His goodness and Life and intelligence and loveliness. His light in us is greater than the darkness and it can be seen and felt by those near and far.

God knows each of His stars, His ideas, intimately and always. The heavenly space in which we all dwell is His infinite Love, and this Love holds us within its expanse and never lets us fail or fall.

“We have different gifts that are consistent with God’s grace that has been given to us.” (Romans 12: 6, Common English Bible)

Celebrate, cherish, accept fully your unique gifts. God’s grace—His perfect and gracious and tender Love—has endowed you with your specialness. We have each been blessed with varied gifts, individualized talents and attributes, and they are treasures to appreciate fully and utilize with trust and love.

Gifts consistent with God’s grace mean they have their Source in divine Love and so they are not only treasures for us, but they also bring that sweetness of grace to our world as well. What we are and what we have is meant to bless us and all. This is the way God works. He is complete and satisfying. His Life is the expression of harmony and is in perfect accord, each idea necessary and pleasing and cooperative.

We have God’s Love, and we have the tangible gifts that this Love provides. Each trait and aptitude is part of God’s holy design, wherein we are all a part of a magnificent whole which expresses His own infinite qualities through us, to us, and to all.

“…light has entered the world and men have preferred darkness to light because their deeds are evil. Anybody who does wrong hates the light and keeps away from it, for fear his deeds may be exposed. But anybody who is living by the truth will come to the light to make it plain that all he has done has been done through God.” (John 3: 20-21, JB Phillips New Testament)

Living in the light is living in and with God. A life that is willing to humbly express goodness is one that naturally glows with divine radiance. It brings to humanity the awareness of holiness, the Truth of Love.

The eternal Christ is revealing God’s light to us all, letting us know that we have it and that we can experience and share it with one another. But we must be willing to release our trust in material powers, our love of or fascination with the darkness, the selfish, the fearful, the limited. This dark view serves as a shadow in which to hide, but it deprives us of the vitality that the light of goodness can give us.

Those who walk in the light may feel the attack of those who are more comfortable in the dark, who fear what they do not understand or what they think is too good to be true. But we must not let their cynicism, their fears, their tendency to blame, call us out of the warmth and glow of God’s reality. We can remember that genuine light, the sunlight of Truth, will always conquer the darkness, the night.

Let’s stay with God, good, Love. Let’s be the dawn to our world.

“I leave the gift of peace with you—my peace. Not the kind of fragile peace given by the world, but my perfect peace. Don’t yield to fear or be troubled in your hearts—instead, be courageous!” (John 14: 27, the Passion Translation)

This is a promise that surely invites us to feel more courage, less fear. It reveals to us that we can receive, willingly and now, the peace that the Christ-Spirit has freely given to us.

This serene state of mind is more than a lack of turmoil or a physical sense of quietness. It is a perfect peace—one that can’t be shattered by the noise of the world or by the beliefs that we are at odds with one another, that harmony is elusive and perhaps impossible.

The Truth revealed by the Christ is the law of God. It is the fact that God is All and that we are at one with Him and therefore with all mankind, all of His children. This spiritual consciousness opens our hearts to the ever-presence of Love and to God’s true control over us, over all.

We can accept this peace and reject the temptation to believe that such a blessing is not ours to have, ours to enjoy. This gentle peace has God’s eternal strength behind it. It is greater than any storm built of ignorance and fear. It comes from the very Love that is unconditional, powerful, and that shores us up with a confidence that invites us to share this wonderful peace naturally with the world as well.

“He found him out in the wilderness, in an empty, windswept wasteland. He threw his arms around him, lavished attention on him, guarding him as the apple of his eye.” (Deuteronomy 32: 10, the Message)

We are never lost to God. We are never alone and unloved even when it feels like our lives are a wasteland or like the winds of time and circumstance leave us feeling untethered.

God’s loving presence is here. God is throwing His arms around us and helping us to see why we are precious and special to Him, the apple of His own perfect eye. We are God’s children, and we can recognize that it is His nature to keep us safe, and to love us with an abundance of attentiveness and affection.

We can surrender to God’s rescue of us. He is right where we are when we let Him find us—when we release the sense of ego and fear and doubt and blame and shame. When we turn to God with love for Him—for goodness, for Life, for Love—we feel His embrace already around us. In the place where anger may seem to be, we find God’s Love already filling it, bringing peace.

We are set free by this Love to return to innocence, to awake to the riches of this moment, and to receive God’s tender welcome home.

“Praise the One who gives us life and keeps us safe, who does not allow us to stumble in the darkness.” (Psalms 66: 9, The Voice Translation)

We can start with praise. We can gratefully acknowledge God’s presence ever with us, and the measure of His faithful Love.

We may go through dark places and feel alone and uncertain. But we are never without the One who gives us life. Indeed, God is our very Life, forever with us and in us. He is always expressing His Spirit, His animating power, upon us and within us. God’s Truth is here to steady us, support us, and defend us against the belief that we are afraid, vulnerable, separate from our good Life.

God has endowed us with His perfect Life. We are the proof of this Life and the object and expression of God’s Love. He has made us in His image, and His nature remains fully with us. God’s qualities are inseparable from Himself, so wherever we are, so is He with all His power and all His Love.

We can never fail to be what God has made us to be. We are never doomed by human errors, held up by obstacles. We never need to succumb to discouragement and disappointment. God is keeping us safe. He always knows where we are, how we are, and what we need. God clears our path, clears our thinking, lets in the light that shows us our smooth road home.

“I just want to obey all you ask of me. So teach me, Lord, for you are my God. Your gracious Spirit is all I need, so lead me on good paths that are pleasing to you, my one and only God!” (Psalms 143: 10, the Passion Translation)

This humility may seem beyond us. It may feel challenging to set aside our own desires and expectations, even our fears, and yield fully to God’s purpose. We may think that obeying God means giving up on things we care about, or living a life that is serious and stoic and humanly difficult to achieve.

But God is here to teach us. He is here to lovingly show us that His way is our way. It is the way that is most pleasing, most progressive, most abundant in what truly matters and fulfills us. We can relish the opportunity to consciously choose to be taught, to listen to what God is sharing with us, to allow the revelations to settle in and bring out our best.

God’s gracious Spirit is all we need. He is gracious—benevolent, compassionate, merciful, generous. And God is not a limited human provider. He is Spirit—limitless, present, powerful, flowing fully and freely for us.

To obey God is to obey the Life that is good, right, and that harmonizes with God’s own intention. It takes us down paths that are pleasing to God, that express our true nature. These roads are not gloomy or stark. They are full of light, life, and adventures that make the heart smile and the soul sing.

“Individuals are consistent who, watching and praying, can ‘run, and not be weary; . . . walk, and not faint,’ who gain good rapidly and hold their position, or attain slowly and yield not to discouragement.” (Science and Health, p. 254)

Let’s do our best to be consistent. Let’s remember that it isn’t how quickly we get all the answers or how humanly perfect we may appear to others. We can rely on that ideal we seek that continues to encourage us. We can move forward at the pace that feels right in each moment.

Let’s not judge our experiences or ourselves. But let’s continue to watch our thinking and behavior, and pray for inspiration, release of ego, a deeper trust. If we feel like a lot is going on, in consciousness and in life, we can certainly move through these times without depletion, without a sense of weariness. We can let God’s new ideas and opportunities energize us, rather than drain us.

Likewise, when we feel that things are stagnating or that inspiration is less than forthcoming, we can trust our intentions. Indeed, if we are aware of feeling unfulfilled, it means we know there can be fulfillment. We are still recognizing possibilities.

Our pauses are not ends. They are pauses. Our right reflection on things can gently, naturally, reveal what is good and true and healing at just the right time, in the right way for us all.

Don’t be discouraged. Trust your consistent hope for good, your desire to know and feel God. He is with us in the seeking as well as in the finding.
