“You are all sons of light, sons of the day, and none of us belongs to darkness or the night. Let us then never fall into the sleep that stupefies the rest of the world: let us keep awake, with our wits about us.” (I Thessalonians 5: 5-6, JB Phillips New Testament)

We belong to the day. We are awake to the Truth. We are full of the light of God.

Let’s know who we are and behave accordingly. Let’s not let the world’s pervasive, often aggressive view, cause us to nod off in apathy or cower in fear. Just because we perceive darkness, doesn’t mean we are without the solution. We are the solution.

Light dispels the gloom and wakes those that are sleeping. We can be leaders by bringing our radiant trust in God, in good, in Love, to a time and a place much in need of this kind of leadership. We can step up and stand out by our willingness to keep the flame alive in our hearts and let it glow out on our world.

Let’s refuse to be stupid and stupefied and instead be wise. The light is always going to win against the darkness. Let’s “keep our wits about us” and be who were caused and called to be—the children and bearers of light, of peace, of Love.

“And those who know Your name [who have experienced Your precious mercy] will put their confident trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not abandoned those who seek You.” (Psalms 9: 10, Amplified Bible)

Our trust comes more naturally as we know God’s name—as we comprehend and appreciate His true nature.

God is Love. He expresses precious mercy towards us, a powerful affection that cleanses us, renews us, reminds us of who we truly are. This pure love of God is bigger than our errors and our fears. It is greater, deeper, more thoroughly healing than human love can be, although we surely see glimpses of it in caring individuals.

We are forever the children of our Father-Mother. We are never abandoned. We are always thoroughly seen and thoroughly loved. Realizing this unbroken divine relationship, we can confidently trust God at all times. We can stop feeling we are lost or left behind; that we are not worthy or not ready for mercy.

Seek Him with an open and willing heart, and He will show you how present, gentle, watchful, and loving He has always been and will always be.

“This doesn’t mean, of course, that we have only a hope of future joys—we can be full of joy here and now even in our trials and troubles. Taken in the right spirit these very things will give us patient endurance; this in turn will develop a mature character, and a character of this sort produces a steady hope, a hope that will never disappoint us.” (Romans 5: 3-4, JB Phillips New Testament)

It can certainly sound like a tall order to be joyous in the middle of challenges. We find ourselves either living in dread of what is to come, or we think of happiness as some future hope, when the human struggles have ended.

But we can note this assurance and take heart, here and now. The very troubles that seem so large and wearying, are actually growing experiences. We can be awake to the occasion we have right now to release our personal control and the burden it can bring. We can set aside our ego and find a richness in humility, in turning from complaint and fear to gratitude and love.

As we learn patience, strength, and grace, we are developing character. We are becoming more of who God made us to be. And we are discovering hope, which leads to inspiration, which leads to purer motives, a fuller sense of purpose, and a joy that outlasts circumstances and brings light to our lives and, naturally, to our world.

“What blessing comes to you when gentleness lives in you! For you will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5: 5, the Passion Translation)

The general belief seems to be that we gain the earth—the rewards, the money, the control, the authority—through power, force, human willfulness.

And yet Jesus, the insightful Truth-teller, promised inheritance of the earth through the very opposite quality. In some translations, Jesus honors the attitude of meekness. Here, we are able to recognize and cherish that lovely idea of gentleness. To value and utilize this natural gentleness within us, gives us the truer, purer, more real mastery over the earth and all it might present to us.

That peace within and the expression of it through tenderness, equanimity, poise, grace, is true power. It proceeds from the Love that is God, and therefore it is omnipotent, as well as right, harmonious, and eternal.

We can quell the belief that we need to be humanly forceful, egotistical or arrogant, in order to gain access to the good that God has for us. Instead, we can release ego to God, to His own gentle hand opening the way for us, naturally bringing out the greater good, the big blessings, for us and for all.

“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” (Psalms 69: 30)

Let’s take this day as a special opportunity to praise God. Let’s sing with our open and receptive hearts a chorus of gratitude for what God is, what He does, what He will do for His beloved creation.

We can take this Thanksgiving Day as an occasion for togetherness in Spirit with others. It is a gathering around God’s table, a space built for the very expression of divine Love’s plentiful goodness and its infinite embrace. We can feel the grace of God’s qualities as we say our words of thanksgiving. We can remember that we are one with our brothers and sisters, near and far, because we are all born of the same Father-Mother-Love.

And this recognition magnifies God. It enlarges in our hearts, thoughts, and actions, the import and magnificence of God, good, Love. We, in our humble praise, can express this awareness of Love and feel its rich benefits within us and be ready and eager to share God’s infinite, ever-replenishing blessings with our families, our neighbors, and our world.

“…this is a critical time. It is already the hour for you to awaken from your sleep [of spiritual complacency]; for our salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed [in Christ].” (Romans 13: 11, Amplified Bible)

This is indeed a critical time. We can’t wait for some sign from the world or from above that it is time to wake up, to get active with our acceptance of the Truth and our eagerness to bear witness to this Truth in our experience.

The salvation that Jesus preached, promised, and proved, is not some lovely idea from the past or some wish for our future. Now is the time to fully realize and relish the fact of God’s Love in this place, here, at this moment, and to accept our oneness with that Love. It is time to challenge any complacency in our thinking and acting, any belief that there really isn’t much that we can do to make a difference or that we must simply be resigned to limits and discord.

Spiritual complacency is a death knell. It not only deprives the world of our reflected ability to have a positive impact, to uplift and heal, it also kills off our light, our love, our own vibrant Life and the purpose that we have been given. We get lulled by a rhythm of familiarity, when it would serve us to recall and feel afresh the Christ-message. We can hear and receive it like young children, invigorated by the awareness that we are now the sons of God and of what that means for a world in need of knowing and feeling this reality as well!

“Man is the expression of Soul. The Indians caught some glimpses of the underlying reality, when they called a certain beautiful lake ‘the smile of the Great Spirit.’” (Science and Health, p. 477)

Have you ever thought of yourself as God’s smile? Just as the beautiful lake referred to here can be seen as the evidence of God’s pleasure, His joy, so we can recognize that we are also God’s lovely and beloved expressions. God, Soul, that One Source and Creator of all identities, is satisfied with the way in which His ideas reveal His own glorious qualities.

We can gratefully recognize that we are God’s image, designed by Him to in every way please Him. Eternally. Perfect God is incapable of imperfection. Perfect Love is incapable of failing to fully love what He has made for that very purpose.

Let’s do our best to catch a glimpse of the reality of this, as the discerning Native Americans did. Let’s know that the Great Spirit, our infinite God, saw fit to make each idea, each one of us, intentionally and with care and love. We are always pleasing to Him, incapable of mutating into something less than lovable, right, and good.

You are not only the cause of God’s smile, you are God’s smile—at one with Him in the honest expression of pure divine joy!

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.” (Isaiah 43: 12)

We are the conscious observers of God’s presence and power. We can be awake to behold all that God is and all that He does.

Let’s stop thinking of ourselves as passive persons without a purpose in God’s plan. We have been blessed with the ability and duty to be witnesses to God’s goodness. This means that we have a consciousness that is aware of the spiritual reality, that seeks out the good and true, and is actively grateful for it.

As witnesses, we see God’s ideas—the true man and woman of God’s creation—using those spiritual eyes that have clear and accurate discernment. Likewise, as God’s witnesses, we are the evidence of His presence, His nature, His Life, His Love. We stand as living proof that God exists, and that He is our Father-Mother, Who is entirely good.

A witness in a trial testifies, under oath, to what is true, what they have seen and understand to be fact. As God’s witnesses, we can realize and declare the Truth of God, testifying with our lives and our conscious praise, that God is God and that we are His image, His children, the radiance of His glorious light on earth.

“Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children!” (Matthew 5: 9, Good News Translation)

To promote peace is to actively affirm God’s own nature, His purpose. God is One, and this Oneness is an accord, a sense of constant harmony and unity.

As we recognize this quality, this law of God that establishes a peaceful creation, we can lean on this principle and allow it to lead us to thoughts and actions in alignment with this Truth. We can be alert to where there is discord in our own thoughts and in what appears as our experience or the world’s issues.

We can know that as children of God, we are naturally equipped with the ability to be what He caused us to be, to reflect His own nature, and so to be a powerful presence to bring out peace in a world that feels full of conflict.

It is not by striving and battling that peace can ever be won. But as we work toward the revelation of this true state of being—playing our part through prayer and understanding and respect and kindness as we are led—we make a difference. And we can feel the true joy this brings. We can be happy, not burdened, as we abide in and express God’s intention with expectation, patience, and love.

“He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]” (Hebrews 13: 5, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

This is an emphatic promise for each of us. God, omnipotent Truth and Life, is declaring to us that we will always belong to Him, always be at one with His power and goodness.

There is no exception to this statement. The voice of the Almighty doesn’t add any ifs, ands, or buts to His guarantee that He will always be with us—fully, actively, assuredly. God won’t leave us without a recourse, without wisdom, without guidance and support. We are the very ideas of God, the object and expression of His own qualities. We can no more be separated from all that God is than He can be separated from His own Being, His own Allness.

Let’s recognize that God is holding on to us and release ourselves to His mighty and loving hand. Let’s surrender the belief that we are fearful mortals and gratefully yield to God’s ready support—His loving awareness, right here and now and always, supplying just what we need. His provision is at hand and His Love will not, will not, will not ever let us go!
