“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love;” (I John 4: 16)

God is Love. This is surely one of the most significant and healing statements in the Bible. The awareness of God as Love can change everything. And it is our great blessing to continue to seek to understand what this really means for us.

John speaks of genuinely knowing God’s love. He recognizes that this love is not only an activity of God, something He does. It is, in fact, what and who God is. So, to know the love of God, to feel this affection from a divine Source, is to know God Himself.

We can continue to yearn to feel and know this Love. Because God is infinite, surely Love must be as well. Because God is Truth, then Love is the Truth of Life, the very Truth of our being and of all creation.

And while we come to know, to feel, to glimpse God’s love, let’s also believe it. This means having faith in the fullness and presence of Love. It is believing, in spite of what the world and the senses may try to tell us, that Love is what is real, lasting, powerful. It is coming to believe that God is not to be feared, He is not destructive, He is not partial, He is not absent, He is not angry. We are to know and believe in Him as He truly is—perfect Love.

And this consciousness brings our hearts peace, our lives health, and our motives and actions the impulse and power of God’s own Love felt, accepted, believed.

“And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life?” (Matthew 6: 27, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

Worrying can feel natural. It may seem like it’s impossible not to be anxious when life can be full of challenges and the future unknown.

But these clear and wise words from Jesus cut this worrying down to size. It is worth nothing to us. It won’t help us to grow or change for the better. It won’t add time to our lives or bring us success and prosperity.

Anxiousness simply clouds our vision to what is available, at hand, for us—God’s blessings, guidance, love. Worrying keeps us occupied with what is neither helpful nor comfortable. It can’t bring us answers for our future or give us peace in our present. Worry is not able to achieve anything. It has no power to help us and can seem to mesmerize us, to keep us from being awake to solutions as well as to that natural peace of mind that is really always ours.

The first thing we can do is to relinquish a belief that we are worriers by nature or that our worry is founded in Truth. You are made in the image of God and cared for by His goodness. Worry is not who you are nor is it necessary or rational.

Let’s yield to our serenity and let’s gratefully enjoy each day, calmly listening for guidance and inspiration, and letting God unfold His perfect and progressive plan for us.

“No one has seen God at any time. But if we love one another [with unselfish concern], God abides in us, and His love [the love that is His essence abides in us and] is completed and perfected in us.” (I John 4: 12, Amplified Bible)

How do we know God’s existence? How do we confirm that He is real and here?

It is not by perceiving a physical presence, a material manifestation of a spiritual deity. It is by experiencing God’s qualities, by an awareness of His nature coming to light in our lives.

When we are truly loving toward one another, with a genuine care and compassion, we are the very expressions of God, here and now. We are not knowing God as some far-off entity or distant hope. We are feeling God in us and with us. We are being the very activity of God, His Truth, His essence, powerfully animated.

This Love is never separate from God. He is Love itself, so all that is Love remains in Him and is made known through His ideas, which include you and me. This Love is not static. It is constantly growing in us, multiplying as we utilize its goodness, and healing us and our world.

The completeness of Love is beautifully revealed in our relationship with God. Divine Love loves us, and so, we are loved, and we love. Love is God’s nature, and it is always ours to both feel and express.

“He’s the Rock, and His work is perfect; everything He does is right. He’s the God who can be trusted, who never does wrong because He’s righteous and upright.” (Deuteronomy 32: 4, the Voice)

God is trustworthy in all ways. We can lean on God with absolute confidence because He is reliable, a rock that is strong, immovable, unchanging, and flawless in quality and action.

Let’s know that this Rock is Truth, and it is Love. When we put our faith in God, we are relying on the omnipotent and omnipresent One Who knows all and Who eternally expresses His own qualities through His creation.

We can stop leaning on persons or human opinions, on material theories and predictions, on time, or on our own egos and pride. Let’s joyously, eagerly, humbly, gratefully release ourselves to God’s protection and affection. Let’s realize that in all circumstances, we have a guide and guard.

Human reliances are ultimately unreliable in some measure. But God’s goodness and His Truth are fixed and immortal, a firm foundation on which we can base our days, our thoughts, our lives.

“But the man who looks into the perfect mirror of God’s law, the law of liberty (or freedom), and makes a habit of so doing, is not the man who sees and forgets. He puts that law into practice and he wins true happiness.” (James 1: 25, J.B. Phillips New Testament)

We can do our best to hold to our insights and inspiration, the true vision of ourselves, and sustain it in our daily lives. We can live with an awareness of what God has made us to be, yielding to His progressive and beautiful purpose for us.

Yes, it may take some discipline. We may need to continually remind ourselves that those moments of communion with God, of awakened thought and understanding, are more clear, right, and powerful than the world’s distractions. The presentations of darkness, fear, discord, are truly nothing against God’s law of liberty that we have come to feel in our hearts.

We can make a habit of being truthful, genuine. We can continue to believe that God’s Word is real and legitimate and that we were actually made to live in accord with it. We can put this Truth into practice. We can agree to be the happy, fearless, perfect ideas God made us to be—His image and His joy.

“The Spirit however, produces in human life fruits such as these: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, fidelity, tolerance and self-control—and no law exists against any of them.” (Galatians 5: 22-23, J.B. Phillips New Testament)

Material life and human will can seem to instruct us and bring us certain attainments, a measure of success. We can seem to advance on our path through ambition and ego. But the qualities that are truly powerful and ultimately satisfying are those that come from a greater and higher Source—the Spirit.

God’s pure Love and goodness are expressed through each of us, as we are ready to accept and then utilize them. These holy traits of God support and enrich our intentions and actions, and they are also our reward, the fruits that naturally come from a trust in Him.

And these wonderful qualities are lasting. Love and its beautiful expression of compassion, kindness, generosity, come from God and they are eternal, untouchable by human laws or material conditions. They are forever at hand and their use only multiplies them in our lives and in our world.

We can awake to the Spirit and what it is always giving us: new ways of showing forth God’s own nature in human experience, bringing a touch of heaven—act by act, moment by moment—to earth.

“Then [with a deep longing] you will seek Me and require Me [as a vital necessity] and [you will] find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29: 13, Amplified Bible)

We can discover God’s presence—His divine Life and Love—as we earnestly seek Him. We can take a pause from the distractions that seem to need our immediate attention and turn to our hearts. What do we really yearn for? What truly matters?

Our deepest longings are really for what only God can give us. We want the Truth. We want to feel that sense of wholeness, confidence, joy, and peace that comes from knowing who we truly are. And this true definition comes directly from knowing God, for we are His very likeness, the expression of His qualities and purpose.

Rather than either questioning or denying that longing within us, we can love it. That yearning is what will lead us home. As we are aware of our need to know God, as a vital necessity, then all the arguments and resistance to the answers begins to fall away. We are searching with hearts and minds open, and we will surely find Him. This is His promise and our saving grace.

“How happy are those who have learned how to praise You; those who journey through life by the light of Your face. Every hour of the day, they rejoice at the sound of Your name. They are lifted up and encouraged by Your righteousness.” (Psalms 89: 15-16, the Voice)

Here’s a recipe for happiness! It is a conscious awareness of God, moment by moment. It is living with a sense of awe and respect for God’s qualities with us, in us, around us.

This joy is a living love for Truth and Life, for the Source of goodness and beauty and wisdom and divine law. It means that we turn away from self, from ego, from that limited and material perspective, and look up and out with eyes on the spiritual reality of things.

It is living in gratitude rather than complaint. It is being awake to each opportunity to grow in an understanding of God and our own relationship to Him as His beloved sons and daughters. It is casting our cares on God with trust and willingness, knowing He will lead us because He is with us and knows what is right and good for us and for all.

Let’s look to the light of God’s face—His Truth shining on us, His Love warming and assuring us—and let’s accept the happiness that dwelling in and actively cherishing His goodness must surely bring.

“At present mortals progress slowly for fear of being thought ridiculous. They are slaves to fashion, pride, and sense…We ought to weary of the fleeting and false and to cherish nothing which hinders our highest selfhood.” (Science and Health, p. 68)

Let’s discover and enjoy our freedom. Let’s put our focus and faith in what is life-giving, expansive, and progressive. Let’s eagerly let go of a fixation on what is limiting and material. Let’s gratefully relinquish an unnecessary and unnatural (to God’s ideas) need to be like others, to follow trends and to feed the personal ego.

We can stop worrying that we will be thought ridiculous for caring about and pursuing spiritual ideas, a greater sense of purpose, and a true consciousness of self that isn’t housed in physicality and others’ perceptions of us. This right endeavor to grow spiritually continually unfolds new light and life.

Material aspirations are fleeting and flimsy. They can’t satisfy us fully or show us that higher selfhood—the one that is slave to nothing and is free to live each day listening and learning, growing in goodness, grace, and joy!

“If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be!” (Matthew 6: 22-23, Living Bible)

We surely would love to feel sunshine in our soul! We want to know and experience that joy and peace, deep within, a genuine light that radiates out into our world.

If we are to bask in and express this sunshine, we must watch our thoughts and our perspective. If our eyes—both those looking inward and outward—are preoccupied with darkness, we miss out on the light that is at hand, from God to us.

When we allow ourselves to agree with selfishness, blame, anger, hatred, and fear, we have chosen the dark and this clouds our vision. This darkness is a chasm to our spiritual growth and to that uplift and health and harmony we truly want and deserve.

We can recognize when these limited views want to transfix us, and choose to turn to God’s light, His Truth about us and for us. This is the Source of that sunshine that is our true nature. And as we look to Him, to goodness and Love, our vision clears, our eyes are ready to see others and our world in a way that is honest, healing, bright, and beautiful.
