“If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be!” (Matthew 6: 22-23, Living Bible)

We surely would love to feel sunshine in our soul! We want to know and experience that joy and peace, deep within, a genuine light that radiates out into our world.

If we are to bask in and express this sunshine, we must watch our thoughts and our perspective. If our eyes—both those looking inward and outward—are preoccupied with darkness, we miss out on the light that is at hand, from God to us.

When we allow ourselves to agree with selfishness, blame, anger, hatred, and fear, we have chosen the dark and this clouds our vision. This darkness is a chasm to our spiritual growth and to that uplift and health and harmony we truly want and deserve.

We can recognize when these limited views want to transfix us, and choose to turn to God’s light, His Truth about us and for us. This is the Source of that sunshine that is our true nature. And as we look to Him, to goodness and Love, our vision clears, our eyes are ready to see others and our world in a way that is honest, healing, bright, and beautiful.

“Mankind, He has told you what is good and what it is the Lord requires of you: to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6: 8, Holman Christian Standard Bible)

We have been given clear instructions from God. These requirements have been given to us because we were created with the capacity to fulfill them. And these rules for life are those which serve us well individually and collectively. Humanity is uplifted and harmonious when we are obedient to these simple, yet powerful directions.

God requires us to live uprightly, conscientiously, with an awareness of what is right and just. This means we must and can consistently strive to listen for Truth, for what is the highest thought and behavior. We may err at times, but as we yearn to be better, as our motives are good, we advance and find peace within as well.

We must not only be faithful, but love faithfulness, as this verse says. It means that we are obedient to God, good, and that we do it without resentment or grudgingly. We can open our hearts to the joys of releasing ourselves to God’s grace and guidance. We can be thankful for what our faith gives us—not limits on life, but heaven at hand.

We are directed by God to be humble. This humility is the key. It means being willing to let go of our own ideas and control and to let God show us His way. It is receptivity rather than pride of knowledge or power. It is that childlike gentleness that brings uplift, healing, progress, and harmony for us, for all.

“I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31: 33, New Living Translation)

We are God’s people, and we know what this means! God has imprinted His love and wisdom in our hearts. We can discover these instructions as we let go of the ego and limited human knowledge, and listen to that voice within, allow ourselves to accept what feels good and right and saving.

God is leading us in how to think and be, to live and give. We express His nature and intention. We belong to God and can honor Him by letting our true selfhood—that goodness and light that God put in us—guide us. Yielding to that law and promise in our hearts, we gain a genuine sense of purpose, progress, productivity, and peace.

This holy instruction, this divine definition of ourselves, is deep within our being. It is spiritual. It can’t be touched by time or matter or circumstance. It remains hidden from the world, invulnerable, and always ours—the very essence of us—to gratefully claim and joyously experience.

“…come, follow me.” (Luke 18: 22)

Such a simple directive and yet so powerful. Jesus so often said these words. He called his chosen apostles to him this way, and they did not resist. They followed.

Jesus also asked that those whom he healed and taught would follow him—would obey his teachings and advance in understanding God’s way, with the Christ guiding and inspiring each step.

This call required them to leave behind life as they knew it as well as their cherished beliefs about what was possible and true. This following may have felt very difficult, and some, though impressed with Jesus’ words and works, could not do it, or needed to grow further into a better faith.

But following Christ doesn’t need to feel hard. It is truly a dropping of burdens, a lifting of limits, an agreement to go forward to discover more of the heaven one has already glimpsed. It is a release of fear and responsibility and a reliance on the greatest thing of all—omnipotent Life and Truth and Love.

Jesus’ request to follow is prefaced by the word “come.” This feels to me like a warm and loving invitation, personally extended to us, welcoming us into something wonderful and right—an adventure that we are ready and right for, a comfortable journey on which we are never alone.

“The unfolding of Your [glorious] words give light; Their unfolding gives understanding to the simple (childlike).” (Psalms 119: 130, Amplified Bible)

Perceiving and pondering God’s words provides a brilliant clarity. As we listen for and receive the ideas God provides for us, we gain glimpses of reality. Each moment of Truth unfolding to our receptive thought instructs us and points the way forward.

As we are childlike—willing to be taught, to hear even what may go against our long-held beliefs or what the world wants us to believe—we gain a rich understanding of what is necessary for life and what also makes that life more beautiful and satisfying.

Let’s allow God’s Word to unfold to us. Let’s take time to let resonate within us any new ideas (or old ideas newly seen and felt), to find meaning, to stimulate thought and motivate action. Let’s be children at the ready for the new lesson of the day, with an eagerness to listen and the humility to wait for God to reveal more with His right and beautiful timing.

God’s Truth is glorious. It enlightens and uplifts. It saves and heals. Enjoy each new opportunity to listen, to learn, and to live His loving word of light.

“God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis.” (Science and Health, page 258)

Progressive being is our destiny! We are created by God to express Him. Infinitely. Eternally.

Our boundless basis is God Himself, the Life that is without beginning or end and is never without fullness as well as newness. The ideas of God, who we are, express His nature and His purpose. We are made to shine without dimming, without pause or decline.

God’s ideas are always rising. We are created whole and perfect, and each moment of spiritual existence unfolds to our receptive hearts and minds more of who and what we are. We are always receiving more good news, more grace, more understanding of the Truth and its fadeless possibilities.

For God is doing the expressing as each of us. He, Mind, is showing forth what He is—Truth, Life, Love, goodness—through His creative ideas. We can’t fail to ascend in being, higher and higher, because God is always revealing more of His vital qualities to us. We are the living proof that God is limitless in glory, limitless in Life, and limitless in His desire that we know Him and that we make Him known in more wonderful ways every day.

“You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.” (Matthew 5: 5, the Message Bible)

Let’s seek and find our true contentment. Let’s not allow the ego to dictate who we are—either to puff us up or degrade us. Let’s come to know ourselves truly—through the eyes of Truth, God.

We can put on or aspire to a false human confidence and seek what the world would offer us as a reward for our ambition. We can conversely see ourselves as unworthy of good or take on an attitude of victimization, lack, self-pity, and give up on satisfaction and joy.

But our blessing truly is in knowing that we are not more or less than what God made. We are exactly what He caused us to be. This true identity is just right, fully approved of, and fully loved. And so, we can humbly, yet gratefully, settle into our true status and begin to see more of what is ours—rightfully, naturally, inherently. And these great revealed treasures can’t be bought because they are priceless, spiritual, and in every way truly pleasing, fulfilling, and abundant.

Release the self-analysis and self-talk and yield to God’s awareness of you as His perfect, precious idea, ready for light, ready for joy.

“For when you demonstrate the same love I have for you by loving one another, everyone will know that you’re my true followers.” (John 13:35, the Passion Translation)

Jesus so loved his disciples. It was more than friendship and companionship. He felt for them a spiritual love, a tender care for their needs, wisely watching over them with a focus on their growth in grace. Jesus knew that his students would carry his mission forward, and he knew that there was one essential element to its success.

Love. As followers of the Christ, the light of Truth and goodness in the world, they must practice this genuine, reflected divine Love, for one another. To preach and attempt to heal without a pure and powerful love in action, would not promote this message to the world in biblical days and it won’t bring peace and harmony today.

Love is needed. It may take some effort on our part to get past divisiveness, personal sense, ego, emotional reactions, and to let this divine Love fill us up and serve as our motive and means in all things. But Jesus did not tell his disciples to do something that wasn’t possible. His directions were revelations of what was not only right, but natural to them, and to each of us.

Let’s love one another, and by each loving thought and act show the world a little more of the saving Truth of Life that Jesus so beautifully and powerfully proved.

“Love never stops loving. It extends beyond the gift of prophecy, which eventually fades away. It is more enduring than tongues, which will one day fall silent. Love remains long after words of knowledge are forgotten.” (I Corinthians 13: 8, the Passion Translation)

Love is eternal and forever active. It endures because it is more than an emotion or sensation; it is a spiritual quality, the very name and nature of God. This Love that is God cannot be contained and it cannot be lost. It cannot wane or become corrupted.

Love lasts beyond all other forms of human action and knowledge. While spiritual concepts and methods of devotion can be inspiring and satisfying, they do not have the ring of reality, the unstoppable energy, the beautiful power, that divine Love has.

The true definition of Love may feel elusive at times. But to know its Source as God and to seek a better awareness of and release to omnipresent Love, we gain peace and purpose.

We can always count on Love to show us something new about Life, to give us a clearer sense of God and of ourselves. We can willingly, eagerly, receive and utilize this Love. We can honor it more than we would fear, sense testimony, and doubt, and by doing so begin to feel this Love within and to be ready to share it freely, genuinely, and gratefully!

“Why are you cast down, O my inner self? And why should you moan over me and be disquieted within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall yet praise Him, Who is the help of my countenance, and my God.” (Psalms 42: 11, Amplified Bible Classic Edition)

We all have times when we struggle within to find a sense of peace and joy. We may feel a lack of meaning in our lives. We may feel unworthy, unloved, or unlovable. Maybe we are prone to self-judgement and doubt, ruminating over the past and fearing the future.

But this inner self that feels cast down and moans over its own being, can be settled, calmed, revived. We can remember that our true soul, our real selfhood, can be found in God. He is the immortal Soul of all being, and as we yield the personal ego to the law and love of God, we feel released and energized.

Let’s stop the questioning of self and instead begin seeking the answers from an honest and loving and trustworthy Source. Let’s stop clinging to some mortal belief in our right to feel low and anguished, and yield to the hope and expectation that opens our eyes to God, to pure and present good.

Let’s praise God Who is our help at all times and feel His loving light illuminating our day and revealing to us a brighter and more fruitful way!
