“…sin didn’t, and doesn’t, have a chance in competition with the aggressive forgiveness we call grace. When it’s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down.” (Romans 5: 20, Message Bible)

Let’s not let sin cause us to fear and to doubt. Let’s not cower in the face of evil and agree to believe that this mistaken view of ourselves and of God, is powerful and harmful.

Sin—an unnatural and untrue belief in separation from God, good—can seem to cause us to feel we are irredeemable, that we have lost our sense of worth. We can succumb to a sense of guilt over mistakes—past and present—and feel that this lesser sense of self is our cross to bear, the limited life we must live.

But grace abounds. And grace is a force to contend with. This tender, present, love of God does not back off in the face of sin, in the face of evil thoughts and deeds. Grace comes with a vengeance, so to speak, to restore our concept of ourselves to what God caused us to be, to cleanse us of sin and the fear of it, and to show us our good life.

Sin is not of God, so it has no power. Grace is God’s own Spirit making itself known to us. It is invincible and relentless in actively bringing us home to peace, purity, goodness, and Love.

“Make your life a prayer.” (I Thessalonians 5:17, the Passion Translation)

What a powerful thing to do! Living life as a prayer is actively, intentionally, bringing healing to our world. It is that conscious connection with God that brings the power of divine goodness and love to light in our human experiences.

This verse tells us not only to take time for prayer—for those quiet alone times seeking and discovering God’s Truth for us—but to pray with our being, with our living, at all times.

How do we do this? I think it is first by wanting to. It is by yearning to understand what it means to be aware of God’s presence, listening at all times, and letting what we are hearing and feeling guide us in our actions. So, we are not only thinking about God, we are also behaving in ways that resonate with His qualities, His purpose, the goodness that our conscientious prayers is revealing to us.

The noise of the world and our own mortal thinking can try to distract us from living this prayer. It can seem like a burden, and yet it is in fact so freeing. Living life as a prayer is releasing Life to God. It is allowing ourselves to be who God made us to be, and humbly, willingly, gratefully, letting God show us what is right in each moment.

It takes commitment, but it can feel so rewarding to be a living prayer—living testimony to God’s Life, His Love, His Truth, His beauty, His goodness, and His boundless saving grace.

“He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.” (Psalms 147:4-5)

God understands all. He is, in fact, All. God’s full consciousness of Himself is the very substance of the universe. God made All, and He is Mind, so He is always fully aware of His infinite creation.

This intimate knowing of each concept, each star, each individual, is our reason for peace and trust. The full expanse of the skies, every celestial body, every creature, is named—formed, seen, known, loved—by God, the Father and Mother of All that is real. We are all as brilliant and beautiful as the stars, and each of us is needed to make God’s creation complete.

God’s understanding is beyond what the ego can grasp. But as we release that personal sense of a little self alone in the universe—misunderstood, confused, limited, fearful—we find that we are one with All creation. We begin to progressively glimpse more and more of God’s Truth. We come to gain a sense of what it really means to be an essential expression of God’s intention, His powerful and loving and eternal Life made known.

“I will graciously give you a new, tender heart and put a new, willing spirit inside you. I will remove your hard heart of stone and give you an obedient, responsive heart instead.” (Ezekiel 36:26, the Passion Translation)

This is a beautiful promise. We can accept it for ourselves and recognize its power in the lives of others as well.

Individuals can become hardened by circumstances or by ego. Cynicism can seem justified, and self-protection may make one closed off to others and fearful of being hurt. We may feel old and set in our ways, or see another as that way—unmovable, inflexible, angry, distant.

But God’s promise is perpetual—just as He, Truth, is—and so it is available to all to receive and feel. Hearts can be made new, tender, willing, giving. We can know that it is never too late for God’s Love to act upon us and to revive us, awaken us to what it feels like to humbly love and be loved.

God’s Love is gracious and kind. It doesn’t blame us or think we are beyond repair. Love simply removes the false sense of ourselves, and reveals who we really are—the very expressions and objects of His own tender, powerful Love.

“The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony.” (Science and Health, p. 247)

Let’s all take a nice retreat!

We may think beauty comes from a getaway to a spa or from certain regimens. It may feel that the way to achieve a true sense of loveliness and wholeness is to focus on the body and its presentations. It may seem natural to evaluate ourselves based on what we see or feel physically and to assume this tells us what we have or what we lack.

But the true recipe for beauty is to retreat from materiality and the conditions that time would put on us. It is to release ourselves, willingly, to that unchanging state of being that is found in God, in Soul, the very Source of beauty and Truth, of Life and Love.

Soul expresses itself in ageless beauty and perfect well-being, continuous opportunity, and unending vitality. This is our true life and our true individuality. We are beautiful and feel beautiful as we allow God’s own sustaining, purifying, beautifying Truth to shine through us.

There is no labor in this, no tricks or potions needed. It is the natural and necessary glow of Life and light that is forever attractive because it is found and kept in God’s enduring Love for each of us.

“Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another.” (Romans 12: 10, New English Translation)

Let’s care for one another. Let’s be conscious of others’ needs and do our best to help and comfort, ease and uplift.

We can feel and utilize that mutual love that truly comes from God. It is that divine Love that created us and unifies us as God’s own children and expressions. To love is to live. To live is to love. It is what we are made of and what we are about. Loving suits us, and it is powerful because of its Source.

We can do more than grudgingly giving to others or sharing out of a sense of obligation or pity. We can eagerly honor one another, as this verse reminds us. We can truly rejoice in actively loving—thinking and practicing in loving ways, as God instructs us in each moment.

We can love the act of loving and we can gratefully allow God to show us just why each idea of His is so worthy of love, just as we also, most certainly, are.

“Man is tributary to God, Spirit, and to nothing else. God’s being is infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss. ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.’” (Science and Health, p. 481)

We are all subject to God’s law. This law of Spirit is one that forms, sustains, and celebrates freedom and joy. This mighty government of God is our protection, our strength, our confidence, our security.

God is Love. And He is Spirit, so He is not confined to a place or a time or a set of circumstances. God’s presence is with us and in us. God reigns over all and His qualities are made known, proven, through His ideas—you and me.

So, we are naturally given the spirit of freedom. We can release ourselves to God’s governing goodness—to the Truth of Life as eternal—and so come to lose the fears and doubts that would keep us feeling caged and limited, small and stuck.

God’s being is our being. His Life is ours to claim and to experience. We are worthy of this Life. We can yield to this Truth and begin to experience harmony, peace, and boundless bliss.

Freedom underlies reality. Let’s feel this promise and rejoice this Independence Day and every day!

“Jesus went out and looked for a man named Matthew.  He found him sitting at his tax booth, for he was a tax collector. Jesus said to him, ‘Be my disciple and follow me.’ That very moment, Matthew got up, left everything behind, and followed him.” (Luke 5: 27, the Passion Translation)

Jesus knew who he would choose as his apostles. His selections were not random or based on human circumstances. Jesus sought out Matthew, with intention. He found him doing exactly what the Jews shunned him for doing—collecting taxes.

Where Matthew was or what he did, did not deter Jesus in finding him and calling him to follow the Christ-mission, to be a blessed participant in a world-changing cause. It was simply what must happen. Matthew’s place was settled for Jesus. He was meant to be an active part of this work.

And Matthew must have felt this. He must have felt not only Jesus’ love and determination, but also the sense of being truly needed. Matthew could leave behind his position, wealth, and perhaps his old perceptions of himself. He could, at that very moment, simply choose to be chosen—to follow.

The Christ is always seeking us out, calling us to leave behind our false beliefs and the limits we put on ourselves, and to be followers of God and His Truth. This may feel like a human choice for us to make, but it is really an agreement to be (as Matthew may have discovered), who we already are—worthy and ready!

“They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.” (Psalms 107: 4-6)

This psalm depicts a people in desperate straits, alone and without a place to call home. They feel hopeless and have nearly given up.

Then, humbly, they turn to God to help them. All the material obstacles, every trial, all the weary wandering, comes to an end. They are delivered—not only from the trouble they seem to be in, but from their fears, their distress over it. Peace comes, and with it, guidance, help, rescue.

We may ourselves be struggling to find a place of security, mentally or physically. We may feel that we are running out of steam and have lost all hope. Or we may see others in challenging situations that we feel are beyond aid. But it doesn’t matter how long something seems to have endured, or how far we’ve roamed into fear and darkness, we can turn to God for deliverance. And we can expect our eyes to be opened to what is real, right, saving, healing, and already at hand.

And then we can learn, going forward, that the solitary wandering is never truly our state of being. God has always been there with us, and we can seek Him and find Him, right where we are, with answers and with Love.

“So now we draw near freely and boldly to where grace is enthroned, to receive mercy’s kiss and discover the grace we urgently need to strengthen us in our time of weakness.” (Hebrews 4:16, the Passion Translation)

When we feel weak, uncertain, afraid, we have a place to turn for solace and peace and renewal.

Instead of giving in to challenges or seeking others’ pity or advice, we can use what energy we have to draw closer to God, good. As we humbly release the human picture and our own attachment to our ego’s sense of control or lack of it, we can begin to let in the light of Truth and Love that can save us.

Grace is enthroned right where we are, and we can come to feel its active influence as we choose to accept it. Mercy’s kiss is at the ready for us to receive it. Our problems and mistaken ideas or missteps don’t push mercy and grace out of reach. Our very need for this absolution, this cleansing, is the reason we can receive it.

Let yourself be loved. Boldly, freely, without reservation or argument, draw near to God’s Love. Grace is neither difficult for Him to give nor for you to accept. Let it light your darkness, strengthen you, and show you your worth and wonderfulness.
