Being Free Now

“The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.” (Psalms 97: 5-6)

God’s presence is the dissolving of all earthly limits, obstructions, abnormalities, and evils. The ever-presence of God, good, is the sunlight of Truth to every lie, that which naturally causes the false sense of life and of substance to simply melt away, without a struggle. There is no hill or mountain built up by material sense, by circumstance, by fear that is not already at the mercy of the purifying Truth of it.

Spirit, Truth actively fills all space. It is not a passive substance, but an active one. Spirit, the very Principle of Life, does not share its Allness with matter, with anything that would tarnish or impair its full heavenly presence. God Himself is the presence of the whole earth. He is the Truth of all Life and all being. He is the sole Occupant of all that is, and He is perfect Love.

The universe is constantly announcing and demonstrating God’s rightness, His active authority, His beauty and clarity and certainty. He made all and constitutes all. Everything sings forth His Love and His Truth. All life naturally and necessarily radiates with His quality, His standard of harmony and perfection. There is no room or reason for anything else. All the people must see the glory of good, for it is all there is to see!

“And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.” (Luke 19: 45-46)

Jesus would not tolerate the adulterating of worship. He could not allow God’s holy temple to be about greed and material gain, about impure motives and lack of devotion to Spirit, Truth. A house of prayer was meant to be a place to commune with the Father, undistracted by material allurements and even the daily work of human experience.

Jesus’s temple was one that consciously honored God and in which the individual discovered more of his own relationship with the Father-Mother, Spirit, Soul, Love. This temple was not merely a material structure. Jesus also spoke of the temple as his body. So, isn’t he also making a firm and uncompromising demand that the body be released from a sense of material worship and focus, to its holy state, the very expression of God’s own pure nature?

Our whole being is a “house of prayer.” We worship with our lives and we should treat our lives, our bodies, our experiences, with that unsullied respect and devotion that honors God over matter; spiritual gain over material accumulation; an unlimited sense of Life rather than a finite one. Don’t let the thieves of matter rob you of that pure experience! Cast out the material sense of self and claim the splendor that can’t be lost, stolen, or bartered, but is always at hand to worship and to love and to live!

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14: 27)

Peace, a serene settling of mind and body and experience, is the great gift of Christ. That true idea of man that Jesus declared and proved has been bestowed on all, a blessed and timeless gift of divine Love. We are the ready recipients of this gift of the Christ-mind, that which is always at one with the Father, with Truth.

The world can never give us this true peace. It can offer us enticements of comfort and health and well-being and success. But these allurements never truly bring that peace that is of God, which meets our yearning hearts with a satisfied surrender to joy. This Truth of our oneness with the Life that is divine, the Love that knows us and never leaves us, is the peace that transcends anything the world, persons, material offerings, can bring to us.

So, let your heart willingly accept this peace, and don’t be afraid; for this Christly gift has already been given to us and it can’t be taken away. We know it already for it is our own deepest desire within. It is not something to arduously strive for, but everything that is natural to us. The frenzied mortal mind is not ours at all. We do have the Mind of Christ and the heart that is grateful, joyful, and at peace.

“Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.” (John 15: 3)

God’s Word, expressed through His tender Christ, is a cleansing action. It is that vital Truth of man’s real being and His unchanging and unbreakable oneness with God, every right quality forever intact. This Word has been spoken, announced by Jesus and demonstrated as the natural healing presence of God in the world.

Now we are clean through that word. That perfect definition of man that God uttered forth as the very demonstration of Himself is a present and permanent freedom from any false defining. We cannot be mortals when it is clear that we are immortals. We cannot be tarnished when we are clean, God’s own radiance actively reflected.

We are not made perfect through human actions nor are we made imperfect by them. We are made clean, made pure, made rightly, through the Word, through the divine declaration of our being. This description of us stands firm and permanent because it is based on a Principle that is unopposed Truth, Life, and Love. It is the Word of God that today and every day proclaims us, declares our state of being, new to each day just as He has written us to be—beautiful, peaceful, happy, right, full of promise and potential, innocent, and clean.

“For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” (Psalms 18: 28)

Are we relying on life, people, money, material stimulations, to light our candles? Are we waiting for some human circumstance to reignite a dying flame? Does our light seem to flicker out at the slightest gust of air, of material opinion or our own human doubts?

God alone has the powerful light that can vitalize our moments and our days and brighten the way before us. It is Spirit and Truth and divine Love that have this capacity to light us up, and God’s great fire is always at hand to give us the encouragement, the vitality, the assurance that we need. When we look to Him for our life, He will never disappoint.  His flame is as eternal as He is—based on those everlasting qualities of Love and Truth and not on the whims of material sense and personality.

Don’t be distressed if your candle seems dim, if your inspiration and joy seem small. This humble state of mind only makes your wick more ready to receive His enlightenment, His assurance, His life-giving power. We can’t light our own candles with anything that can endure. But the true light of God’s love is always here, always ready to break the darkness with the torch that awakens, warms, and satisfies.

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Psalms 91: 11-12)

God’s angels, His sustaining and comforting messages of Love, are watching and saving us. These divine ideas have a purpose. They are God’s own posse, bringing us in, restoring us to our home with Him and in Him. These ideas necessarily find us where we seem to be and bring us to where we already and always are—the safe place of God’s embrace and His intention.

You are never alone. God is found in the activity of His angels. He is the very substance of them, and the touch of these present ideas is always healing. God’s angels are not obscure or out of reach. They are not distant nor do they forget or make exceptions. They are the very touch of God’s hand, God’s infinite Love being infinitely loving—reaching us always and bringing us in for the embrace of Truth, of understanding, of peace.

These divine messengers, these spiritual intuitions and inspirations, must bear us up and over the earthly dangers, the stones that would seem to appear in our path ready to trip us up or obstruct our way. We are lifted easily by these strong angels and set down again in the lap of God’s care. Listen and accept gratefully and without reservation the gentle presence and loving power of these ideas. They will always lead you to your rightful place—at home in the house of Love’s abundant treasures, contentment, and joy.

“The despotic tendencies inherent in mortal mind and always germinating in new forms of tyranny, must be rooted out through the action of the divine Mind.” (Science and Health, page 225)

The mortal mind, that mind opposed to God, to infinite Spirit, is always attempting to take control of things. This material view of things is tyrannical; it is a claim to power which is abused, oppressive, and arbitrary. It is a belief in power that is without reasonable righteousness and benevolence.

Mortal mind will continue to search out ways in which to wrest power from God, good, Love. It will drum up new delusions to parade as reality and authority. As spiritual vision grows and expands, the material tricks may seem to get more subtle and dangerous. We must be alert to these temptations to accept and prop up a leader who is not divine Truth and Love.

How can we win back our freedom, elect the right government that is kind and lawful and loving? We must get rid of the tyrants, root out the beliefs in a power opposed to God, and live in peace and harmony. It is not something we can do humanly, but it can and must be done through the action of Mind. By yielding to the true Principle, to that Mind that is revealing lies through the light of Truth, we can uncover the usurpers to power and at the same time see their powerlessness.

Matter’s cruel tricks can’t change our citizenship. We are free men and women, unconditionally, lawfully, immediately and always.

“TEMPLE. Body; the idea of Life, substance, and intelligence; the superstructure of Truth; the shrine of Love…” (Science and Health, page 595)

Let’s treat the temple with respect. Let’s revere that right idea of Life, that pure and perfect spiritual substance, which expresses God’s sacred ideal. We can recognize and enter into that true temple, that real sense of body that is not physical, but is the truth of our being.

Honor this place of intelligence, beauty and Love. Know that right where you are, everything that you express is the right and orderly and lovely representation of all that is whole and holy. Treat your body appropriately. Embrace it as the very image of God’s purpose, as the accurate expression of all that He has seen fit to show forth in order that His own glory is known. Love the body, for it is not yours to defile or to disrespect, but God’s own idea to cherish.

The body is spiritual. It is composed of God’s sacred thoughts and it is a place of harmony, peace, comfort. There is nothing harmful or disquieting about this temple. There is nothing to despise and everything to rejoice over. We are forever at one with this “shrine of Love.” We are always within this “superstructure of Truth.” We are established and at home in this holy place, God’s true temple, our oneness with God and all that He is and all that He loves.

“In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.” (Psalms 62: 7)

You are safe and successful. Because of the nature of God’s Love and the fact of His ever-presence, you have protection, affection, and triumph. We don’t need to look anywhere else for these necessary things. God has them all, and He is faithful, present and infinitely generous.

God, good, is our rock, that strong foundation on which to stand. He is Truth, and the Truth is not shaken by lies about it, any more than a rock is moved by the waves that crash against it. This Truth is the fact of Life as spiritual, and therefore without limit, without finiteness, and immortal. Nothing can shake that rock of strength, and our place upon it. Where Truth is, we are, for we are the ideas of Truth, the children of God.

Our refuge is God, Love. We are always embraced in that Secret Place, that sanctuary wherein all is preserved in its holiest condition—in wholeness, purity, perfection. We can no more be set outside that Love than a thought can become separate from its thinker. Our being is safe within its definition as the image and likeness of God. We can’t be what we are not, and we must be what Truth has proclaimed us to be.

In God is our strength and safety, our perpetuity and glory, and in God is our grateful praise and boundless joy!

“The evidence of divine Mind’s healing power and absolute control is to me as certain as the evidence of my own existence.” (Science and Health, page 177)

The author of Science and Health had a great confidence in the healing power of Truth and its expected evidence. Mary Baker Eddy was so clearly convinced that she knew that as sure as she had being, so was the divine Mind in control, exclusively, and this was something to which human life could bear witness.

I love this conviction, and I turn to it at times when I’m praying for healing, for understanding, for peace. Can I mirror that great surety that Mrs. Eddy expressed? Is there any reason that the Truth should be less real to me than it was to her? The Truth is in fact our own existence. Just as we are alive, just as we have being, so there is God expressing that wonderful Life. Our being is inseparable from that Life that is divine, good, perfect, and ever-present.

Take your stand with Mrs. Eddy on this. We have no reason to doubt God’s presence and power when it is actually right where we are, in the qualities that we express, perceive, and love. Those ideals that we may seem to reach for are coming to our thought because they are true and right and necessary and available. Everything that we would hope for, every heavenly idea of Life as perfect good is within our reach, as present and powerful and absolute as the fact of our own existence. The evidence can’t be hidden. We are it!
