Being Free Now

“Ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you:” (Joel 2: 26)

We can start the praise and gratitude right now. We can recognize and claim that wondrous treatment that we have gotten and continue to get from God, from the source of our goodness and the keeper of our life. There is nothing scanty or meager about God’s grace and goodness. Infinite Love is generous. We are well-supplied.

Accept the satisfaction you are allowed to feel, and let the plenty that is yours freely be revealed as not simply some slim hope, but as the ever-present, ever-available Truth of your being. You are worth it, and God knows it. He made you worth it! And divine Love takes great pleasure in providing for your life, keeping you in His trustworthy hands—giving you the cushy seats, the best spread, the perfect view. Claim the bounty!

Know just how much you deserve this fullness of good, and accept your plenty without qualification and with plenty of thanks! God has dealt wondrously with you. He has seen your goodness and your light and your heart, and He is pleased. You can want for nothing when divine Providence knows your every need—not only that which will sustain you, but that which will most truly satisfy.

“Deity was satisfied with His work. How could He be otherwise, since the spiritual creation was the outgrowth, the emanation, of His infinite self-containment and immortal wisdom?” (Science and Health, page 519)

God needed no “do-over.” He was and is fully satisfied. He didn’t make a mistake or bring into life something that was not up to His standards. The substance of God, His creative Principle and His perfect loving Mind, has nothing to draw from but perfection. There is no other possibility for the outcome than for it to be just-right.

If an artist were to have clay as his medium, the sculpture would necessarily be made of clay. The apple tree produces apples, not peaches. The source and substance guarantees a certain result. The creation of God, Spirit, could only be the very expression of His own contents, His own nature, His own quality and intelligence. God’s man is just what you would expect from infinite wisdom and perfect Love.

We are indeed the very radiance of God’s sunlight of Truth. We satisfy Him fully because we are exactly what He intended and can be nothing else. Everything He loves is in us and remains there for His constant pleasure and joy, and so that His own nature is fully revealed. God’s “infinite self-containment” includes a completeness wherein everything is perfectly right, necessary, and the proof of that glorious Principle that is Love.

“Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.” (Ecclesiastes 7: 19)

True wisdom is more powerful than all the physical force and material strength of the world’s opposition to good. The wisdom that proceeds from divine Mind, accepted into human thought and relied on, can overcome all odds and the pervasive sense of materialism, cynicism, and fear.

The “city’s” presentations, the limits and conditions that seem to make some things possible and others impossible, some burdened and others blessed, and to continue to bedazzle with glorious yet limited good, can be naturally overcome through simple wisdom. The practical truth of Life and its goodness, of the right thing rather than the wrong one, of love rather than hate, resentment, or defensiveness, can dissolve the false bravado of evil, and set the city free.

For truly our city is richly full only of God’s ideas, of heaven’s principles, of men and women mighty not in human power but in divine reliance, reflection, and natural goodness. Let that divine wisdom lead you in all that you do. Nothing that is right is impossible. Trust that divine wisdom which is God, Mind, telling you not only what is pleasant, but what is real and true and enduring.

“Mortals are egotists. They believe themselves to be independent workers, personal authors, and even privileged originators of something which Deity would not and could not create.” (Science and Health, page 263)

God is the only Ego, the one and only Originator of all life, all action, all expression. Mortal man is not a personal activator or perpetuator of anything. Creation is an activity that belongs exclusively to God, to perfect good, to divine Spirit, to Love. The limited sense of independent minds can’t for a moment either recreate or destroy what the infinite divine Mind has already perfectly defined and designed.

It is egotistical to believe that we create our world and that we can also, by our behavior or thoughts, destroy it. Are we greater than God? Are we almighty? Is the limited belief able to redo or undo what the limitless Mind has already wonderfully done? We have a reliable Creator Who would only create the right, the good, and the true. We can leave it to Him, and leave the arrogant mortal mind out of the question altogether.

All the beautiful and inspired things that would appear in our lives are made by Him. We may feel that we have created a piece of art or come up with a good idea, but we have the true privilege of being the recipients of these gifts, these blessings that enrich us so naturally and so can’t help but do the same for others. Rest in the fact that humility is our true state of being and it is also that very quality that causes us to thrive, grateful that all we have comes as a graceful and lasting gift of Love.

“Now will I rise, saith the Lord; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.” (Isaiah 33:10)

The word “now” says a lot to me in this passage. It tells me that as God is now the very presence and authority in all things, and demanding immediate recognition, so can I rise up to my full stature at any time, NOW!

This word of God is an open invitation for immediate healing. It is a call to get up, wake up, stand up and be counted among the living children of God—healthy, confident, free and powerful to express that. This “now” is potent and pointed. It doesn’t waffle. It doesn’t hesitate. It doesn’t vacillate. It doesn’t make excuses. It demands instant acknowledgment and corresponding action!

Let’s feel and receive and use the power of this “now.” Let’s know that in this moment God is exalted; He is the law and our very loving Life. We can stand up and walk in this demand and with the gratitude found in the sweet grace of our lives. God’s word is never tentative or questionable. It is definitive. It is active. It is requisite. Let’s rejoice in that fact right here, right now!

“The Spirit of God not only maintains this hope within us, but helps us in our present limitations. For example, we do not know how to pray worthily as sons of God, but his Spirit within us is actually praying for us in those agonising longings which never find words.”  (Romans 8: 26, JB Phillips New Testament)

God’s loving Spirit is our constant Helper. He is always assuring that we find Him, the divine and perfect Life which is ours by birthright and by divine Love’s necessity. The distractions and discords of mortal life would attempt to deter us from knowing our well-being and enjoying its riches.

But God, being the ever-present activity of Love, will never leave us or cease leading us to the promised joys. He is trustworthy to keep awake within us the hope of goodness, peace, fruition. We can always utilize that light which He keeps alive within us because of His tender affection.

And in those moments or even years where we feel prayer eludes us—how do we even begin to still thought and let God’s word speak?—He is there with us, being the living prayer that isn’t to be reached for, but which dwells everywhere and within our heart of hearts, announcing itself as God’s active law of Love. When we feel so human and so limited and so helpless, He doesn’t desert us, but instead gathers us in and shows us that we don’t have to search for the divine presence at all. We are always and already safe in it.

“The understanding of his spiritual individuality makes man more real, more formidable in truth, and enables him to conquer sin, disease, and death.” (Science and Health, page 317)

Let’s be quick to study up on our spiritual individuality. Let’s get well-acquainted with our identity as God caused it to be, and utilize that understanding to enjoy the riches of being the worthy and wonderful men and women we are. God Himself, infinite Truth and Love, has designed and defined us, uniquely and with a wholeness that is permanent and perfect. We are simply splendid!

When we know better who we really are, it makes us strong and powerful for we also then must know who we are not, and what we are not subject to. As a spiritually-formed idea, expressing the nature and substance of God, good, we simply can’t be mortal, subject to sin, disease and death. We can’t be two places at the same time or two individuals at once. We can’t be in heaven and hell at the same time. We can’t be spiritual and material.

So accept your spiritual nature. Get to know its facets and capabilities. You are strong and sinless. You are undamaged and whole. You are discerning and forgiving. You are innocent and free. You are intelligent and interesting and complete and completely loved. You are healthy and wealthy and full of joy. Accept this divine definition and listen for God’s outpouring of additional admirable characteristics. Be true to your true self and live accordingly and triumphantly!

“When the destination is desirable, expectation speeds our progress. The struggle for Truth makes one strong instead of weak, resting instead of wearying one” (Science and Health, page 426)

Peace, joy, home, heaven, harmony are certainly a desirable destination! Our journey, our movement forward by Soul’s awakening can be seen not as an arduous climb, but as a safe and swift passage from the limited to the limitless, from the promise to the fulfillment.

It is important to focus not on the obstructions and impediments and various human limits in achieving any right thing, but on the goal and God’s support of it. We can love the nurturing of an idea. We can enjoy the seed, then the bud, then the full blossom, with equal gratitude and satisfaction. In doing so, we begin to see more good appear, naturally and effortlessly. We are in the midst of goodness itself rather than striving for it, and so peace, joy, heaven, home, harmony are being seen now instead of hidden in a distant hope.

Striving for Truth, for the fullness of our rights as children of God and the reality of things, does not need to be wearying, wearing, depleting. If we stay focused on the manna of the day, we will find that we are always sufficiently fed, always infused with new energy and expectation. Right where we are, Life is revealing the absolutely right portion of good to sustain us and to keep God’s loving promise alive and active and true, and that is fun!

“Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” (I Thessalonians 5: 5-6)

Don’t become a sleeper, full of apathy or timidity or doubt. We must remain engaged in good, awake and conscientious, radiating with our natural light, not denying it or hiding it. We are born of God’s own qualities, and those are vital and alive with healing and with progress and with joy.

We have the Truth and we know that we do. That gives us a special calling and the ability to carry it out. Others may find it easier to complain and accuse, to wallow and to hibernate, to sleep and extend the dream of a life based on the darkness and limits of matter. But, we must stay awake, basking in our own light which is God’s light reflected. We must be alert to the subtle call to passive ignoring and ignorance, and wake the world to this as well.

Know your heritage. You are not a dark and dreary and miserable mortal, doomed to mistakes and loss and disappointment. You are God’s own son and daughter! You are His ideal and you are here with a purpose! Be sober—unaffected by the distractions and dulling that the world’s thought and allurements would propose. Have a clear purpose and a clear-headed joy that each day helps beckon all to see the dawn, the new day that God Himself, divine Love, has made!

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” (Matthew 6: 6)

The closet of prayer is not a stark and empty place. It is not lonely and dark and mysterious. It is a place that is full of soothing and energizing angels. Your new and beautiful garments are there to put on, to express your renewed and purified concept of your own being. Shutting the door on the world’s invitations to fear and to distract and to worry us is a precious thing to do. Don’t delay!

Our secret prayer is more powerful than our public presentations. Our simple listening, blocking out the voices of material sense and human opinion, is a humble and receptive place to be. We can find this closet anywhere. It is accepting that thought that is calm and ready to hear. It is recognizing in the moment that the Truth of things is found in God, in the ever-present spiritual qualities that transcend the lying testimony of the senses. It is an acceptance of peace because we know that divine Love is here and is All.

This secret acknowledging, listening, and redressing ourselves in the cloak of gratitude and peace, is openly rewarded. Our silent prayer and praise is seen openly, right here and now, because it clears our own vision to what is already here and ours—a heavenly earth that is constantly demonstrating God, good, harmony, and the open secret that Life is Love.
