Being Free Now

“…evil can have no place, where all space is filled with God.” (Science and Health, page 469)

This simple fact is our salvation from danger, from anguish, from disease, and from fear. The Truth of God’s infinitude is a Principle that proves without measure or obstruction and which actively heals. This is not simply a pretty thought without any proof, or an idea that floats about without substance or action.

All space, all identity, all reality, all thought is filled by God, perfect good. This firm and immovable presence does not compromise its supremacy or allow the occupancy of anything other than the Truth that is good, that is Love. Evil does not have a shred of room to exist, to germinate, to grow, or to act. It is a false sense of the Truth and the Truth casts it out by being All-power, presence, and action.

“There is no spot where God is not.” This was a Sunday School saying, drilled into my memory. Its simplicity does not undercut its power. In fact, this very basic Truth is an active rest for children and adults. God and evil can’t co-exist. God is here and there and everywhere. Evil is neither here nor there and is nowhere. Let’s take this Truth to town! Let’s believe in nothing but God and enjoy the safety and serenity that comes of knowing and living Life as that which fills all and fulfills each and every one of us.

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalms 16: 11)

Look around. Listen to your heart. Recognize the natural and clear and assertive presence of joy making itself known to you. There is nothing distant or illusive about happiness, satisfaction, peace. The pleasures that truly bring contentment and gladness are as near as your next breath, as close as your own self, as infinite and available as Truth, God. Perfect Love is your companion right now.

The path of life we walk in may appear to be dark and covered with rough stones or obscuring branches. But it is only the human perspective that can’t see the beauty right there as well as our natural ability to navigate through and over any seeming impediments. The light that guides is our trust. It is our willingness to accept both the splendor of life and our own immediate and unconditional worthiness to enjoy it fully.

The path of Life, the walk with God, is always resplendent with loveliness. When we recognize God in all things, we are able to hear that the whistling wind has a giggle in it, the blazing sun is a beaming smile, and the stones upon which we walk are marbled floors upon which we can gracefully and gratefully dance.

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” (Exodus 33: 14)

God spoke these words “face to face” to Moses as he was preparing to lead his people into freedom. This holy presence of God is a promise for us as well. God’s presence and present-ness, His qualities and power, accompany us in every place and at all times, whether into a humdrum regular day or into new challenges.

There is nothing we can do to escape His hand holding ours, His voice in our ears, His Life in the walk of our days and His Love expressed in and to and through our very being. God’s presence, His essence, His substance, is inseparable from us in every way and under every circumstance. We get the whole of Him and we get Him always and now.

This mighty atmosphere containing Truth, Life, and Love, is our rest from fear, from toil, from care. Because God is the very substance of our days, there is no confusion in them, no lack, nothing to fear. His intelligence and His conscientiousness is our trust, the reason that our own watch is natural and full of eagerness and joy. Our own work is only the expression of what He is and has already so wonderfully done. His presence is our glory and it is also our present and active and comforting and energizing peace today and every day.

“The law of the divine Mind must end human bondage, or mortals will continue unaware of man’s inalienable rights and in subjection to hopeless slavery…” (Science and Health, page 227)

The celebration of freedom today can be more than patriotic gratitude for human rights and privileges in the United States. We can truly rejoice in something even bigger, deeper, and which is universally available immediately and without conditions.

We may dwell in different countries and feel subjected to different human laws, some right and enduring, and some questionable and even inhumane, but the law of divine Mind is over all, no matter what our citizenship, our age, our gender, our race, our economic status or tax bracket. The inalienable rights we have under this infinite law of Love set us free to enjoy a perfect quality of life. Claiming our status under God, we can get out from under the unnecessary slavery of material existence with all its limits on our prosperity and well-being.

Our health and happiness are divine rights. The law of divine Love sets us free from bondage to sickness and limitation. It unfurls the eternal bill of rights under which we all are protected. The slavery to sense and matter and fear can be cast off. These do not have the force of law, and are overruled by God’s Principle, the supreme law of Life, Truth, and Love.

“Science declares that Mind, not matter, sees, hears, feels, speaks.” (Science and Health, page 485)

Relax and let those spiritual senses take over. The divine Mind governs every function of our being. Material organs can neither reveal truth nor obstruct it. The right idea must be made actively apparent. God is definitively All and in all, so all comprehension and all expression must be right and perfect and infinite.

We can trust that divine Mind to be consciously, conscientiously operating at all times and in all places. The divine sight is insight, foresight, and expansive vision. Mind’s hearing is clear, distinct, soothing, inspiring, awakening. God’s speaking is intelligent, natural, confident, and loving. This expression and awareness is never distant, dim, or dull. It is powerfully gentle, natural, and without flaw or impediment and forever available.

In Truth, our ears, eyes, mouth are not matter, but are simply God’s way of assuring that we know Him. Spiritual awareness is a quality of God, not of material sense, so it is not limited or localized. It is not housed in an organ or reliant on sensation. We know and we feel with loving clarity. And so we are satisfied, for we know ourselves truly, as God alone knows us—pure, perfect, beautiful, active, wise, immortal, immutable, divine.

“…whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.” (Philippians 3: 16)

Stay faithful to your demonstration. Keep pace with the ideas that have dawned and made sense to you, that have seemed simply right and clear and true. Don’t be quick to forget the spiritual truths that have brought you peace and healing. In other words, don’t forget God and His thoughts, presence, goodness and power.

The attainments that we make in discovery and inspiration are cumulative. Each ideal claimed and adhered to, becomes a foundation from which to grow and to prove even more of the divine Life in every day to come. Don’t forget the blessings when mortal mind would get you speedily caught up in its own new array of troubles. The Truth that is real and right has not left you and its vital messages continue to be available for your reliance and for your rest.

And don’t be so quick to jump ahead. Keep in step with your angels, not out ahead of them. Let yourself be led. Right where you are and just what you know are enough for this moment, and Spirit in its divine action will naturally and necessarily propel you forward into a fresh revealing when the time is ripe. Trust your own awareness of God to be enough and cherish it, utilize it, stick to it, and enjoy the freedom of obeying the active rules of Love!

“The treatises I had read and the medicines I had taken only abandoned me to more hopeless suffering and despair. Mortal mind needed to be set right. The ailment was not bodily, but mental, and I was cured when I learned my way in Christian Science.” (Science and Health, page 382)

This grateful comment is a precious reminder of the true solution for our ailments, our complaints, our fears. The thorough perusal of every material cure, a comparison of symptoms with fellow sufferers, long and tedious and fear-inducing write-ups on disease, are not the answer to health and peace of mind. In fact, they seem to keep the human mind focused on the very things that it needs to lose—preoccupation with matter and the fear of it.

This testimony is an assertion that the way in Christian Science–yielding material sense to the clear and simple message of God’s spiritual creation, and dwelling in that atmosphere–brings healing. The cure for this ailing one was to feed that mortal mind—the human mind when it is focused on limits and darkness—with the sunshine of Truth, the light that wakens and breaks the mesmerism of duplicity with matter’s false suggestions for life.

Today we are flooded with information, easily sought out through technological advances. It won’t take long to find some gloomy prospect concerning any symptom, and we always discover a variety of tested and untested solutions, if there is a solution found there at all. This search is in vain and its results unreliable. In fact, it only keeps our thinking in mortality, in limit, in fear, when there is a ready answer of peace at hand. God’s message is clear and clearly for us. It is tested, tried, and true. It is not speculation, and it contains nothing fearful and everything loving. We can give up the compulsion to seek causes and solutions in the vast confusion of material sense and instead open ourselves up to be found and to be found whole in the infinite wisdom that is Truth and Love.

 “Reality is spiritual, harmonious, immutable, immortal, divine, eternal.” (Science and Health, page 335)

Only the life which expresses these qualities is real. And only these qualities expressed are real life. The Truth of being can be found and appreciated in this definition of reality and we will never sufficiently find it anywhere else. The spiritual and unchanging and deathless is the real and the solid and the certain and the reliable. The material, mutable, and mortal are unreality–flimsy suggestions having no reason for our agreement or compliance.

Take a good look at life, and see Life. Agree to believe and abide only by the real. The fiction is not our life. We are not actors in a play or characters in a novel. We are living expressions of all that is really true, that was made by God, and that by definition is eternally right and therefore real. Only that which can’t be shaken–those spiritual ideas of God–constitute life and can be trusted for our safe abiding.

We must and can look at our lives through this spiritual lens, measuring each idea and suggestion against this description. Does what we are feeling or seeing look like the reality that Mrs. Eddy describes here? If not, should we believe it, live it, fight with it, worry about it, dissect it? God’s reality is our true life and its discovery and acceptance opens the door immediately to that which is truly solid and satisfying. Let’s get real, here!

“Truth, and not corporeal will, is the divine power which says to disease, ‘Peace be still.’” (Science and Health, page 144)

Attempting to bring the body or life into subjection by the force of human will really can’t succeed or satisfy. A personal sense of control is by nature limited. It doesn’t know what infinite Mind knows or do what the Almighty can do. The divine will and wisdom alone has the righteous power to command the waves of sense and to truly quell the belief in disease and discord.

We must lose our personal sense of control in order to lose our personal sense of disease. Truth, the everlasting divine will, can bring out the highest and most perfect idea of man. Truth has established each of us in God’s likeness and Truth is able to reveal that likeness to us better than the human thought can ever conceive or achieve.

The peace that is our body’s natural state can be found and felt through yielding to God and His loving Mind, by releasing our lives and bodies to infinite Love. The divine will is kind and all-powerful. It is always able to bring us not merely what we humanly want, but what is just right for us, that which is healthy and inspiring and uplifting and full not only of comfort, but of pure and purifying and joy-filled Love.

“Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God.” (Science and Health, page 254)

Our restless wanderings are not for nothing. Our mental and physical journeys to discovery, to healing, to peace may seem to batter and weary us and cause us to question our direction and even our purpose. But don’t despair. We are accompanied by the Guide that will never fail us.

We can know that even while we feel we are searching for this sanctuary of understanding, we are most necessarily already comfortably housed in God’s dwelling, and welcome there. Our heavenly home is already right where we are. It is in the Love that God is holding us in even as we question His presence, doubt ourselves and our lives. We may seem to wander on earth (in earthly beliefs, time, limits, confusion), but that is only because our home isn’t really there anyway.

We are the honored guests of God, safe in heaven, in the unbreakable embrace of divine Love, of all that is right and free and comfortable and ready for our claiming. Our seeking is our finding, for our heart’s desire is God’s intention. He put that very love of Truth within us, and He is now and always leading us to the understanding that we are already and perpetually home, always established and settled and at our destination—at One with perfect Love.
