Being Free Now

“We must not attribute more and more intelligence to matter, but less and less, if we would be wise and healthy.” (Science and Health, page 62)

It may not be easy to at once let go of any belief in matter—its properties and actions. It may take some disciplined thought and prayer to wash away a belief in and a fear of what the material senses want to parade before us as substantial reality.

But, if we can actively begin to give matter less of our interest, our preoccupation, our trust, we will be on the right course. We can certainly recognize that while matter appears to operate and act, it doesn’t have a mind of its own. It has no center for intelligence or thought. It can’t propose a premise or carry it out. The material body isn’t out to save us or out to get us. It doesn’t have a perspective, a point of view, or an intention.

Let’s progressively realize that a lack of intelligence can’t push us around. God is Mind, the only One, and He is wise and loving. His Principle is flawless, and everything He creates and sees is a part of His intelligent design. This is the reliable source for an understanding of how things really are. Matter is not a truth-teller. It has neither wisdom nor eloquence. It is simply nothing, a false and limited impression of things. We can daily see matter and the senses for their ignorance, and each moment gain a greater sense of the reality that is our real and lasting health and happiness.

“The questions are: What are God’s identities? What is Soul?” (Science and Health, page 70)

The answers to these questions describe our nature, the substance of our being and the grandeur of our possibilities. God’s identities are expressions of His own Being, of the qualities that make up His character, infinite goodness and life and love. Soul is the Source of this expression, the One Ego from which emanates every individual expression of Himself, the perfect thought always rightly and fully expressed.

Soul is the way in which God actively expresses His Mind. God’s infinite ideas are not latent, hidden, or without manifestation. Soul is how God announces His presence. It is seen in beauty, in form, in color, in the infinite capacity of things to inspire, awaken, move, and delight us. Soul is Life on resplendent display.

This Soul, being God, is the creative power of the universe. It is His infinite awareness and constant activity that requires the natural, necessary, and pleasing expression of all ideas held in His Mind. God’s identities are His representatives set forth to grace the world. These identities are Soul’s aspects brought to light, and they are you, and they are me, and we are God’s thrilling and pleasing ideal!

“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” (I Corinthians 15: 22)

Adam’s destiny is death. That mortal sense of man born of dust and ending there, in the earth, is a deadly premise. It not only dooms man to a finite existence, a dark and gloomy end, it also darkens his days with the shroud of fear, lack of hope, apathy, and a life that reflects that false burden.

The birth and generation of Adam and his progeny is not our fate. We have the Christ-Truth. This is the true declaration of our independence from deathly living, life that is small and full of fear and resignation. The Adam-man is so focused on material generation that it neglects the law of regeneration, the renewal that Christ brings, the life that endures and is full of joy.

Cast off the shroud of Adam and his kin. This is not you. You are not ashamed, dirty, full of fear and braced for punishment. You are the very child of God’s love, His own spiritual expression, the very evidence of His presence. God is Life. You are His Life made known, eternal, pure, and never old or tapering off. God is infinite and eternal. This is your destiny and your glory. Deny the blame and punishment cast on Adam. You are not that man! You are alive and well and living in celebration of that wonderful fact of Life.

“…be not grieved and depressed, for the joy of the Lord is your strength and stronghold.” (Nehemiah 8: 10, Amplified Bible)

God’s delight is our protection. His joy is ever-present and immediate, and our joy in Him, in goodness and love, is everywhere. This happiness is natural to us and inseparable from us, for we are never apart from the source of it, God.

We have every reason to be joyous and to give up grief and depression. There is nothing stronger than Omnipotent Life–that Life that is full and promising and perpetual. This divine Life is constantly refreshing us, beckoning us into newness and glory, even when we feel the world is crashing around us. The darkness is made to be lit. It calls out for the light of Love and receives it.

And this acceptance of our natural and necessary happiness is our strength and our foundation. The beliefs about loss and disappointment, inadequacy and failure, can’t take our joy away from us unless we agree to it. Being joyous, grateful, aware of God’s ever-available and active good, brings it to light; and our natural state of freedom, lightness and happiness surfaces. It is easier to accept joy than to deny it. We are built to laugh, to smile, and to love. Your purpose is to lighten the world with your radiance. Don’t delay!

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye beak every yoke?” (Isaiah 58: 6)

God comes to us with a perfect release. The Truth is here to actively free humanity from its troubles, its false beliefs, its fears. This divine demand is not wishy-washy, here and there, coming and going, or exclusive. God is All and His mandate for His own creation is that it accurately and enduringly express His righteousness.

The wickedness that would appear towards us or within our own thought can’t unfairly bind us. It can’t keep us within the confines of fear and anger, resentment, victimization, self-pity. God’s goodness is death to evil. God’s presence is the absence of anything unlike Him. We are always subject to divine benevolence. We can’t be kept in bondage to a false concept about life, about good.

Those burdens of worry, lack, toil, and the belief and fear of disease, are taken away, are undone. They are borne away by the Truth of their inability to deny God, good, its rightful place and power. Every yoke must be broken. All that are oppressed by this belief in material trouble must be set free to see reality, perfection, peace. This is God’s law of Life and He does not waver in His enforcement of it.

“And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.” (John 12: 47)

Jesus came with love, with peace, with salvation. Condemnation and judgment played no part in his mission and it shouldn’t be a part of our thinking or living either. Christian Science practice excludes judgment, for judgment ignores the perfect Love of God, denies the first commandment.

Ears deaf to Truth or antagonistic to it are not to be judged. Who among us has not questioned, doubted, feared, and taken the side against our own better sense of things? Our humanity and that of others is not to be cursed, but to be uplifted. The personal sense of anyone isn’t their full potential or the reality of their being. We are all so much more, and the healing comes by seeing that, for ourselves and for all.

So, let’s not be personal judges. God alone is the judge and He judges His children righteously, by requiring their progressive understanding. An unbeliever is no less a child of God and no less worthy to know that. Our compassion is needed toward others and towards ourselves. We can’t save the world if we don’t love the world. Human judgment limits all things. Divine Love expands, unlimits, and unites all things in one great, loving, healing good.

“Consciousness, as well as action, is governed by Mind, — is in God, the origin and governor of all that Science reveals.”  (Science and Health, page 480)

All awareness as well as all function and activity is governed by God alone. God expresses all and He also thinks all. We don’t have a little consciousness trying to grasp a big idea and make it heal us. Consciousness is one and that one is God. He is the only thinker, the only state of mind at all, and our very own to claim and rely on.

We have the natural ability to think only that which is right and true. The divine Ego does not slip into fear or discouragement. It is not mesmerized or obsessed or ruminating. This consciousness is focused and clear and limitless. It is alert 24/7 and never weary in this attentiveness. This divine consciousness, this infinite awareness of all that is good, is the thought that is saving us right now. Know it and hear it.

God, perfect Love, absolute Truth, is in control every minute. Every thought and action proceeds from this Originator, this perfect Mind that knows all and that all good, all Love. The world and all things in it are truly under the conscious and conscientious control of infinite wisdom. His Mind is right and so His thoughts, you and me and all, are right, perfect, in agreement, and fully expressed.

‎“For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.” (I Peter 3: 10-11)

If we want to live the life that Love has given us, we can’t be denying this love by our words, thoughts, action, or inaction. Our good days are those days where God is most expressed. These are the days that bring us peace, inspiration, and elation. This conscientious consciousness is grace to the world and a contentment that blossoms.

We can’t be too diligent about this. Watch your words, don’t just have regret. Watch your thoughts, don’t just figure they don’t matter. Watch your actions, don’t just self-justify. Watch your inaction, don’t just excuse it. We must be true to God and therefore to ourselves. Any evil we let by is just so much good we have turned our back on. The riches of God are hidden by the shadow of error.

This does not mean we have to be perfect mortals, and certainly not that we feel guilty and ashamed when we make mistakes. It simply means we need to be aware, alert, and active in our worship of, our love of, that which is good. It can’t be passive or put-off. We can and must claim that we are sons and daughters of goodness, and so this good life, this life of loveliness, is ours both to express and to experience freely.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” (II Corinthians 13: 14)

We are the receivers daily, hourly, of this rich blessing and promise for life. That grace, that unconditional bestowal of loving divine goodness, is ours because of who we are, and where we infinitely dwell. The Christ, that true idea of God and man, has described to us in meticulous detail just what our lives must be like as the children of God we are. We can’t escape this grace, for how can we be separate from infinite Love?

This blessing includes also the Holy Ghost, that demonstration of spiritual power and presence here on earth. This proof of God is felt in our hearts and is expressed through our communion, through our natural sharing with all our sisters and brothers, God’s own wondrous children of light.

This beautiful benediction is our own promise for each dawning day and also our kiss good night. We awake to this graceful goodness and can seize the day that includes all good and the ability to share it with others freely and joyfully. Likewise, we can lay our heads down at night knowing this grace endures and preserves and defends, and that all are embraced and welcome in the unity of God’s Love.

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10: 16)

Our innocence doesn’t exempt us from our duty. We are being called forth into the world, into what may appear to be opposition, limitation, misunderstanding, accusation, and distrust. It may feel like we are consciously setting ourselves up for trouble, for a furious fight against a real enemy.

But Jesus admonished us to do our duty, expressing the very nature of God that is ours to claim naturally, freely, and powerfully. We reflect the qualities of Mind in that we are wise in our innocence. We are not naïve, and yet we are pure. We are unadulterated in our worship, in our conscious awareness of God, Spirit, as the only power and the power that we earnestly love.

Our sweetness, our innocence from mortal lies and that barrage of time and fear, makes us prime warriors against evil. We simply cannot believe it. We do not let it move us, concern us, chase us away. Instead, we discern the error for what it is, so clearly wrong in the pure water of our understanding, and go forth fearlessly, with the harmless, yet healing power of Love. We are sharp as the serpent, and yet we bear peace on our wings, just like the dove.
