Daily Inspiration, October 25th

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” (Matthew 16: 24-25)

To be Christ-like, to evidence the ideal man and bring healing to our world, we must lose ourselves. We must surrender a personal sense of ourselves as little persons with our pre-existent characteristics and learned behaviors. We must give up the belief that we are mere mortals, separate and singular in personality and capacity.

Jesus has called us all to be disciples, for his demonstration of life over death, divine Mind over matter, was not a selective display. It excludes no one and we can’t simply look with awe upon his proofs as if they have a sacred and untouchable place for us today. Jesus was not an exhibitionist. He was a teacher. Let’s listen and know that when he speaks to his disciples, he speaks to us all. He is guiding us to our good lives, our best selves, reality, harmony, heaven.

And that means we have to “lose” our lives. This is not martyrdom. It is not dying for a cause. It is so much more and so much more lovely. It is casting off a sense of a personal, separate self, for the conscious awareness of Life in God, as God’s own idea, designed of His qualities and proving His nature. We can’t cling to the mortal sense of limits and at the same time claim our divinity, our holiness, nor prove it in a glorious and fruitful life. Let’s be today’s disciples. Let’s lose our limited lives and discover the true Life, one that is rich in all that is right and healing and giving, and which alone truly satisfies us because it truly satisfies God’s purpose for us.

“And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17: 20-21)

The kingdom of God, that place of harmony, peace, a sense of resolution and satisfaction, is not a place outside of ourselves or in another dimension of space or experience. Jesus was well aware of the active reality of this heavenly kingdom, for his knowledge of its available presence brought healing to many in his day and beyond.

We have to put the brakes on that mental state that is always waiting for tomorrow to bring in the blessings, effectively pushing the kingdom of heaven away by our rejection of this moment’s opportunities for prosperity, health, and joy. In the same way, we might set our heavenly life as contingent upon another person—what they can do or what they are not doing or what they have taken away or can take away from us. We may decide that a circumstance or even a specific spiritual revelation is the key to getting us in the door of heaven.

But, Jesus clearly said to stop looking to others, to locations, to the future or to the past. He told us that our kingdom was within us. It isn’t to be found with the physical senses, but in spite of them. It is the truth of ourselves that God put there, within us. It is that childlike self that is innocent, free, made in God’s image and given the awareness of that fact and the love that goes with it. The kingdom of God is found in the purity of heart that accepts it, that is willing to believe and so to live that present heaven that is our very being.

“The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God’s will must be universally done.” (Science and Health, page 202)

The truth of God and man can’t just sit in some holy book somewhere as a lovely idea, too beautiful to touch, or merely be some reward to aspire to. The unity of God and His child, you and me, must be demonstrated. We have to put into practice this magnificent spiritual law in tangible ways. We have to use it in order to truly know it and honestly love it.

Our life-practice is a career founded on our God-given talents, for we have all been made of His qualities and we express them naturally, with enthusiasm and necessary success. Yes, this practice is work, but it is not toil. It is leaving behind the baggage of a life that jumps through hoops, comes up against obstructions, accepts limits and lies, for the reality of a life that is one with infinite possibilities and capabilities.

We don’t need to know every detail of our unity with Love in order to practice it. We simply start with what we do know, what God is giving us hour by hour. We know these inspirations are right because they feel right. So, let’s not be timid about trusting our angels, our intuitions from Truth itself, the honest-to-God facts of our lives. God’s will is universally done because He is the Spirit and the Life and the Love behind all that we do and all that we are.

“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” (Hebrews 10: 16-17)

God’s contract with us, this divine agreement, is a connection that is inherent and can’t be broken or altered. We are at one with God, with good, with the Truth of Life because it is the very essence of our being. We can’t escape the reality of ourselves, even when we may sometimes fail to recognize it.

That perfect law of God is in our hearts and minds. It is that righteousness that we know is the way, that tender truth of our worth that we can’t fail to respond to. The sins and iniquities, the mistaken beliefs about self and about life, have no power to separate us from the law that announces and enforces our freedom. That law is the substance of our very being. It is the center of ourselves, an available constant.

The covenant of God does not come by our creating it or earning it. God is the Creator and the Keeper. He has bound us to Him, and being all-power, that bond of perfect Love and Life can’t be severed or lost. No erring or hidden sense of God, of Truth, of reality can change the fact of our bond with beauty, with health, with joy, with tender affection, and with God’s faithful, saving, graceful law of Life.

Daily Inspiration, October 11th

“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” (Proverbs 28: 13)

We can’t hide our errors or hide from them, and really have the full and free life we want and truly deserve. If we are living in avoidance of confronting or owning up to mistaken beliefs or practices that are not truly pure and full of God’s qualities, then we are living dishonestly, against our real nature, and the Truth must set us free.

These covered sins are meant to be exposed. This exposing is not our doom or our shame or embarrassment. It is our cleansing, refreshing, new start. It is not psychoanalysis or self-analysis that reveals these hidden demons. It is the light of God and His Love. As we yearn to know more of God, claim and express those right qualities that we perceive, we can’t fail to begin to see those errors emerge as simply undesirable, unnecessary, and having no real attraction for us or necessary attachment to us. And we can give them up, without looking back.

Mercy comes through honest reflection and fearless confession. Our absolution is not begging for mercy, but a clearer sense of God’s goodness and a genuine desire to experience it, without any impediments or shadows cast upon it. Our confession is not a declaration of guilt, but an acceptance of innocence, of the inmost desire to lose the limiting beliefs about ourselves for the glorious truth of our beaming lives. We can see the sins as nothing more than distractions from a truly honest life—one that expresses God, good, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth.

“The sun shall no more go down; neither shall the moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.” (Isaiah 60: 20)

Our days and our nights are controlled by God. They are always the proper movement of Spirit, of the light that is ever-present, and that is always balanced as well as beautiful. There is a consistency in God’s universe. There is that reliable goodness that does not move out of sight with the comings and goings of human experience. God’s light is a loving constant.

God’s days and nights are the sun and moon of divine Love’s action. That bright and brilliant awakening idea leads us forward into opportunity, vitality, expression, purpose. Every day, every unfolding moment in God’s completeness, is unique and yet equally full of care and rightness and love. Each day of God is to be rejoiced in, for each day contains the whole of His goodness and Love, and His demand that it be expressed in us.

And the moon does not withdraw either. It’s steady and soothing light is also there in the midst of our night hours. It is our restful transition, not a time of fear. God’s night light is always a beacon, a comfort, and a warm glow for the children, you and me. We can’t be afraid in that luminous and beautiful glow that calls us to a natural rest. The darkness of loss and doubt and confusion must dissolve in that soft light that never leaves us alone and that always faithfully loves us.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy 2: 15)

Doing our work, striving for the high goal of goodness, is necessary in order to gain a real sense of who we are, of the freedom we deserve. We must obey God’s lesson-plan. We can’t get a full grasp of all that Life is and that Love does without some discipline, concentration, study, and prayer.

Having attained a right sense of God and of ourselves we can go forth in the world with our heads held high, knowing that we are demonstrating God’s qualities in the measure that we are realizing their presence, grasping their import. And we don’t need to be ashamed that we are workmen. We don’t need to feel that we are only approved of when we have achieved some state of perfect knowledge.

In our working, in our actively dividing the truth from the lie, day by day, hour by hour, we are doing well. This act of studying, working out the principles through practice is given a sure blessing. There is no shame in not knowing the whole of God’s Mind, His Principle, His plan. The student is not the teacher and does not need to be. Being a pupil of Christ is not a preparation. It is a life-long vocation. And it is one for which we should be full of gladness, confidence, trust, and gratitude.

Daily Inspiration, October 2nd

“To understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire.” (Science and Health, page 3)

This statement should not be daunting to us. While eternity may be required to fully comprehend God and His infinite qualities, the pursuit of this understanding is where our joy is, how our life is always fresh and growing in authority and satisfaction. Coming to know God, Life, is a priceless activity.

We can’t gain this expanded awareness by living in a box of limitations. We can’t stay still and expect to move. We can’t be obedient to matter and its false premises and gloomy conclusions, and expect to gain the fullness of life that we naturally have and deserve. We must consecrate ourselves to what is right and real.

Disciplining thought will bring a chaotic life into an order that is like the stars in the heavens—steady and beautiful and broad. We can’t accept a varied array of opinions about life, or speak one thing and do another, and at the same time grasp God’s glorious Truth. We must focus our mind and our energy in the winning direction, and remain faithful. This is not a hardship, for what are we focusing on but eternal Life and infinite Love?

Daily Inspiration, September 27th

“Waking to Christ’s demand, mortals experience suffering. This causes them, even as drowning men, to make vigorous efforts to save themselves; and through Christ’s precious love these efforts are crowned with success. (Science and Health, page 22)

Shedding old ideas, giving up the mortal sense of a fear-filled and doomed life, can require a major adjustment. As this old and binding skin molts away, we may feel that our world is falling apart around us and even within us. This sense of suffering isn’t God’s requirement for our reaching Him. It is only that shift out of the familiar old way, and into the new. The birth canal is sometimes dark, but it necessarily leads to fresh light and life.

And this suffering sense guides us even more to God, because we know that all the human methods we have tried before have not worked. They do not bring us release, understanding, or true and lasting joy. The drowning man can’t reason himself out of the waves or call upon his friends to help him. He must reach out to something greater, something spiritual, something full of life-saving, restoring Love.

And this is where the Christ comes in. Our recognition that we do indeed want to live– to really live in a way that defies the mortal concept of merely settling for a form of life– opens our minds and hearts to salvation. That Truth is ready to lift us out of the waves, not through human effort, but by the divine demand of God, Love. And so our suffering is lost and forgotten for we not only survived the daunting waves, we have been reborn to freedom, limitless opportunity, and a true sense of Love and its tender power.

Daily Inspiration, September 25th

“The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.” (Psalms 145: 9)

Mercy extends to all God’s ideas. Every single one of God’s creations is subject to His love, to His goodness, to His tender care and redeeming touch. There are no exceptions made, no exclusions for bad behavior or lack of understanding. God is Mind and His ideas can’t escape Him, can’t be extracted from their place in His loving thought and active affection.

Man may seem to distance himself from this loving care by assuming a separate ego, looking away from the face of divine Love in favor of material sensation and material premises and their limited and limiting experiences. But sooner or later, we must all awake to the fact that not for a moment have we belonged to ourselves, to a mortal and material perspective. We have always belonged thoroughly to God, infinite good.

Each and every one of God’s ideas has an equal share in His boundless, powerful tenderness and an equal measure of His infallible, impregnable protection. God requires that we reflect Him, so we must be the full representation of all that He is. We must be and are the satisfied, peaceful, harmonious children of a Father-Mother Who is perfect, present, and impartial Love.
