“…now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil confronting me.” (I Kings 5: 4, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

We are protected on all sides. We are embraced in God’s Love and guarded by His Spirit. There is no entry point for an enemy to get through. There is no vulnerable gate where evil can sneak in and attack us.

Let’s know that God truly does give us rest. This is a rest from worry and personal responsibility. It is a rest from ruminating or feeling defensive or victimized. We are surrounded by God, by good, by His peace. We can’t truly escape God’s presence, so our situation is always in the middle of good. God assures that our being is safe, because He knows us, loves us, and is the law of our lives, our good lives.

This rest on every side means also that we needn’t look behind us and feel that the past is full of unrest. Nor should we look ahead of us in fear of the future. The before, the now, and the later are all God’s place, His space of Life, and we dwell there. We can know this and let go of the feeling that there is an adversary, an adversity, haunting us or awaiting us.

We have comfort and peace on all sides. We have life in God right now, yesterday, always.

“…and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.” (Matthew 2: 9-10)

The wise men were told to seek out the savior, this newborn child who was said to be the Christ. Their wisdom was in looking up, following not their own personal beliefs or their reservations about this blessed event. Instead, they looked to the heavens and followed the star, believing that it was indeed a sign of something wonderful.

That star signified the light of hope and of salvation. These wise men, and the shepherds who would also gather around Jesus’ place of birth, were awake to something new. They went to discover what was going on and they let go of any skepticism about it. Instead, they rejoiced with exceeding joy.

As our Christmas draws near, let’s raise our eyes and our hearts to something precious and meaningful, hopeful and healing. Let’s stop looking at the earth for its predictions of gloom and doom, and let’s instead look to the heavenly guide—that continual Christ-light that can awaken us, and our world, to the Love that can save us.

The birth of the Christ is at hand. Let’s be willing to accept God’s guiding light leading us to where healing can begin anew and where peace can be found in that tender place where Love’s beam shines—in our joyful, humble, grateful hearts.

“Drink deeply of the pleasures of this God. Experience for yourself the joyous mercies he gives to all who turn to hide themselves in him.” (Psalms 34:8, the Passion Translation)

We can find comfort and sustenance in God. At any time, no matter what our circumstances seem to be, we can find safety in God’s tender and powerful embrace. We can recognize security and hear guidance, lose fear and doubt, as we draw close to God, hide ourselves in His qualities.

This separateness from the world, from human opinions, from our own argumentative, judgmental egos, can bring us a sense of peace. And, as we linger in this space with God, with divine Love, with Spirit, we can gain so much more. We can go deeper and really discover joy, a renewed sense of life.

We are being invited, freely, into this place of God’s presence, this consciousness of our oneness with God and all that He is. Here, we find God’s mercy washing us clean; His Love reminding us that we are children, beloved; His light leading us toward a true feeling of freedom, lightness, opportunity, even adventure.

This God, this good God, is ready to give us pleasures, treasures. Drink deeply. Breathe in His Life, and gratefully rejoice that He is always right where you are, ready to bless.

“As vapor melts before the sun, so evil would vanish before the reality of good. One must hide the other. How important, then, to choose good as the reality!” (Science and Health, page 480)

We do have a choice! Are we going to allow the fog of evil to obscure the sunlight of goodness and Truth that is constant and powerful? Are we going to accept that evil, darkness, fear are greater than God, good? Are we going to hide in the dark and argue for its reality? Or are we going to come out into the light and experience and share the good news of Life as God made it to be?

As we stop buying into and feeding the lies of fear and threat, gloom and doom, limitation and discord, we begin to see the dawn. We see that vapor as nothing at all, an illusion of darkness where light exists and reigns. Love is God and God is All. So, this Love exists in every place, at all times, where we are, now. Evil and hatred can’t be where God is. It simply isn’t possible.

So, let’s do our best to stop believing in the misty sense of life. Let’s stop seeing ourselves and others as stuck in some pit or as heading into one. Life is light, now, and for all. Choose to see it! Choose to be it!

“I want everyone everywhere to lift innocent hands toward heaven and pray, without being angry or arguing with each other.” (I Timothy 2: 8, Contemporary English Version)

The world would benefit from our following this direction. If we were to truly turn toward God, toward that light of Love, and listen for His Truth, we would surely feel blessed. And if we were to do this with a heart full of peace with one another, we could begin to feel that true unity in our own lives and to witness it in the greater world as well.

What does it mean to lift innocent hands? Well, I think it may mean that we find that humility within us, let go of resentments and blame and shame, and like eager children turn our attention toward God. We can mentally lift our hands in praise of God’s goodness and strength; in praise of His creation that is harmonious and lovable and loved by Him.

We can start fresh in this moment, with our arms outstretched to receive and feel the refreshing baptism of God’s light and to awake to His promise—one that leaves us feeling renewed and joyous, expectant of good and not jaded or gloomy.

And this genuine prayer, this yearning and yielding, must leave behind divisiveness and argument, anger and self-justification. To receive God’s blessing, we must honor Him and to honor God is to honor Love itself.

Awake to and awash in this Love, we feel forgiving and forgiven. We are ready to walk arm in arm with others and bring peace to the hearts of all.

“And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].” (Philippians 4: 7, Amplified Bible)

This sweet benediction promises us the gift of true peace. It describes that real serenity that is more than a human sense of calm that can be easily stirred up again by the winds of time and circumstance.

The peace of God is divine. It comes as we turn to Him and let Him comfort us, show us who we are, let ourselves feel the boundless depth of His Love for us. It is a peace that remains within us even when the surface seems roiled by challenges.

God’s peace reassures us that we are safe in the embrace of Love; our beautiful and unique identity is forever sustained in Spirit; we are never separate from the Truth that sets us free.

This awareness of reality, of our true connection with God no matter what, releases us to this all-encompassing peace that not only settles us in this moment, but readies us for the next. This peace of God claimed within us also provides us with the means and desire to help others—to give them comfort and inspiration, strength and assurance, so that they, too, can feel safe, confident, and at peace.

“You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.” (Psalms 16: 11, New Living Translation)

Knowing and accepting the presence of God is an awareness of our best life. The psalmist is confident that God will show him the way, guide his experiences, teach him, lead him forward in God’s own purpose for him.

And this way of life that God unfolds lovingly for each of us is not one that happens alone. God does not give us a map and then expect us to figure it out from there. God is ever-present. With His direction comes His hand holding ours, lifting us up, pointing out the way, steering us back when we get off course.

God is our companion on life’s journey. In fact, He constitutes every moment of being, is the infinite light and substance of all. We walk with Him and in Him. And God is Truth and Love, so we can trust this infinite presence to be one that feels safe, comfortable, natural, yet powerful.

As we awake to God’s presence, we can rejoice in the unchanging fact that we will always be living in Him. We will always be dwelling in the Life that loves us, that created us, that is constantly showing us the right and beautiful way to be, to see, to live.

“With tender humility and quiet patience, always demonstrate gentleness and generous love toward one another, especially toward those who may try your patience.” (Ephesians 4:2, the Passion Translation)

Gentleness and generosity are such beautiful qualities. They are so healing because we are expressing God’s own nature as we treat one another with lovingkindness and care.

It may be easy to feel an overflow of good toward those whom we love or those who we feel are deserving of our attention and affection. It may be more difficult to remain gracious and tenderhearted toward those why try our patience, who seem difficult for us to get along with or who we believe behave in ways that we don’t approve of.

But we can’t pick and choose. In fact, those individuals who challenge us may very well be the ones who most need our love. And in our gentle kindness toward them, we give ourselves the gift, too, of feeling God’s love unite, rather than divide us.

This love must be genuine, not superficial. We must express these qualities with tender humility and quiet patience. It isn’t just what we do. It’s how we do it.

Let’s lean more on God and His Love. Let’s discover the freedom of humility and act towards others with sincere kindness, quiet sweetness, and loving respect.

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” (Psalms 100:4)

Let’s approach thanksgiving as if we are walking through a glorious gate, being invited in to experience something wonderful. It isn’t only about the holiday rituals and gatherings, although those can be lovely. It’s about consciously coming into that beautiful space of gratitude.

And this we can do every day. We can come before God, Life, Truth, with a sense of honor and awe. We can look around us and within us and discover the Love that is truly the very substance of all that is. We can recognize with spiritual eyes open, the treasures that are ours to enjoy and to share—those gifts of beauty, inspiration, generosity, humor, honesty, integrity, compassion, goodness.

These wonderful qualities and so many more emanate from God. They are His own nature being made known.  Through our thanksgiving for these attributes that we see expressed, we awaken to the greater good that may seem hidden. We see possibilities to grow, to help others, to love better and to receive love more graciously.

We are always welcome to go through the gates—into that beautiful palace that is God’s kingdom, His place of peace and joy, of unity and harmony. Giving thanks openly and in our hearts is the password to enter and enjoy God’s bounty and to share it with all.

Happy Thanksgiving!

“And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.” (II Samuel 23: 4)

God’s light dawns with gentle beauty. It touches us and our world with tenderness, but with generative power. God’s Truth brings life to each day and natural light to the darkness.

This cloudless morning is ours to which to awake. It is today. The sunlight of Love’s ever-presence is glowing into the open windows of our hearts. We can receive the reviving good news gratefully, willingly, joyously.

We can recognize that God is ever with us. The goodness is greater than the gloom. The Truth outlasts and outshines the lies. And any storms we may seem to have encountered in the night of confusion and doubt, become only times of cleansing, causing new inspiration, new resolve, new opportunities to grow and to sparkle like sunlit dew on fresh grass.

This day is new and ours—full and beckoning us to embrace it and to share its promise with one another.
