“We will show mercy to the poor and not miss an opportunity to do acts of kindness for others, for these are the true sacrifices that delight God’s heart.” (Hebrews 13:16, the Passion Translation)
Let’s willingly and even eagerly make some sacrifices. Let’s be ready to give up a sense of ourselves as all-important, or as needy, or as isolated beings with no purpose beyond our own survival.
We were made of God’s Love, and to feel and utilize this abundant Love is to serve God rightly. All we sacrifice is a false sense of ourselves, one that is stingy or selfish or fearful, based on a merely material view of life and what it has to offer. We have so much to give, and as we sacrifice a belief in limitation—limited time and limited resources—we have glorious and frequent opportunities to do good for our fellowman.
Let’s make it a practice to be merciful toward others. This means that we spend less time holding grudges and being defensive and more time allowing forgiveness and respect and Christly love to be felt and expressed in us. Let’s never miss an opportunity to be kind.
These occasions to bless another are numerous. We can be alert and ready. We can sacrifice a preoccupation with self and be fully occupied with doing the beautiful, constructive, inspiring work of Love.
