“Human affection is not poured forth vainly, even though it meet no return. Love enriches the nature, enlarging, purifying, and elevating it.” (Science and Health, p. 57)
We can rejoice in the wonderful treasure of loving. Expressing love honestly means also feeling love in us, moving through us, and so experiencing a true connection with the source of love—God.
We may feel that our gift of love isn’t received or appreciated. We may feel that love is a tool for getting something in return, that its purpose is to gain affection and appreciation.
But this beautiful quote reminds us that when we love with an open and giving heart, from a pure intention, we do not need an acknowledgement of it or some tangible return from humanity. When love is shared and felt for another in our hearts, it is powerful. The very act of love and the acceptance of its quality in our thoughts and being, enriches us.
To love is never a waste. A relationship may not work out. We may not receive quickly what we hope for through our loving acts. But the Love that is of God, felt and expressed, makes us better. It elevates us. And when we simply love to love, we are set free from the constraints of self to truly enjoy being who we were made to be—the children of God and the very proof of God’s presence. This uplifts us and it never leaves us where it found us.
