“It is easy to love those who love you—even a tax collector can love those who love him. And it is easy to greet your friends—even outsiders do that! But you are called to something higher: ‘Be perfect, as your Father in heaven is perfect.’” (Matthew 5: 46-48, the Voice)
We are called to something higher in the manner and extent to which we love. We must be and can be perfect because we are God’s children. We express His pure goodness and light. We are made in His image to achieve His purpose.
So, let’s love. Let’s love without measure. We can do this. We can surely practice love toward those who are loving towards us or those who we find lovable. But let’s elevate our love to a level more divine, one that we are naturally made to express.
Let’s be kind and respectful toward all. Let’s learn to see God’s child, His beloved idea, in everyone. Let’s behold one another as we would like to be seen. Let’s allow that natural love within us to expand out toward all.
We may not always receive love in return, but as we love as God would have us, as Jesus taught us, we are being true to God and to ourselves. We feel more peaceful, more revived, more alive. For this perfect Love in us multiplies. It heals. It fills us up to where we feel whole. We begin to understand who we really are, and the very act of loving makes us feel genuine joy.
