“And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life?” (Matthew 6: 27, Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)
Worrying can feel natural. It may seem like it’s impossible not to be anxious when life can be full of challenges and the future unknown.
But these clear and wise words from Jesus cut this worrying down to size. It is worth nothing to us. It won’t help us to grow or change for the better. It won’t add time to our lives or bring us success and prosperity.
Anxiousness simply clouds our vision to what is available, at hand, for us—God’s blessings, guidance, love. Worrying keeps us occupied with what is neither helpful nor comfortable. It can’t bring us answers for our future or give us peace in our present. Worry is not able to achieve anything. It has no power to help us and can seem to mesmerize us, to keep us from being awake to solutions as well as to that natural peace of mind that is really always ours.
The first thing we can do is to relinquish a belief that we are worriers by nature or that our worry is founded in Truth. You are made in the image of God and cared for by His goodness. Worry is not who you are nor is it necessary or rational.
Let’s yield to our serenity and let’s gratefully enjoy each day, calmly listening for guidance and inspiration, and letting God unfold His perfect and progressive plan for us.
