“I just want to obey all you ask of me. So teach me, Lord, for you are my God. Your gracious Spirit is all I need, so lead me on good paths that are pleasing to you, my one and only God!” (Psalms 143: 10, the Passion Translation)
This humility may seem beyond us. It may feel challenging to set aside our own desires and expectations, even our fears, and yield fully to God’s purpose. We may think that obeying God means giving up on things we care about, or living a life that is serious and stoic and humanly difficult to achieve.
But God is here to teach us. He is here to lovingly show us that His way is our way. It is the way that is most pleasing, most progressive, most abundant in what truly matters and fulfills us. We can relish the opportunity to consciously choose to be taught, to listen to what God is sharing with us, to allow the revelations to settle in and bring out our best.
God’s gracious Spirit is all we need. He is gracious—benevolent, compassionate, merciful, generous. And God is not a limited human provider. He is Spirit—limitless, present, powerful, flowing fully and freely for us.
To obey God is to obey the Life that is good, right, and that harmonizes with God’s own intention. It takes us down paths that are pleasing to God, that express our true nature. These roads are not gloomy or stark. They are full of light, life, and adventures that make the heart smile and the soul sing.
