“Try your best to live quietly, to mind your own business, and to work hard, just as we taught you to do.” (I Thessalonians 4: 11, Contemporary English Version)

Paul was reminding his followers to continue in the way he had described to them. These practices best served the intention of the Christ-message that Paul was sharing, and it would also support their individual peace and well-being.

It seems difficult at times to live quietly and go about our own business. The world would want to call us to get caught up in its stories, to feel the need to prove ourselves, make a name, compete, argue, or to gain validation and accumulation.

But we can try our best, as this message reminds us. We can take that pause and recognize that minding our own business means being mindful of God’s business, letting Him guide us in what is right and pleasing and fruitful. We can work hard by staying faithful and not slothful; by allowing that divine light and Life within us to move us to diligence in doing what we are truly called to do, knowing we are supported in it by divine power.

And we can live quietly. Not only are we able to do this, we are allowed to do this. We have holy permission to enjoy quietness, privacy, a sacred stillness with God that will bring to our interactions more depth, more understanding, patience, progress, and gratitude.
